Da'Shawn Hand was at the gym simply to watch, a means to catching up with friends during a trip home to Virginia following Alabama's season.

Hand did not intend to work out, plans that changed after some banter and playful challenges for Hand to show what he could do on the bench press.

The 6-foot-4, 273-pound defensive lineman warmed up briefly before loading up the bench press with 225 pounds and lying down to perform a set with his friends and mentor, John Harris, standing around watching.

Hand, a rising sophomore, did 42 reps, five more than any player got at the NFL scouting combine in February.

Wow 42 reps at 225 is a lot. Sounds like he is physically ready for the SEC, the rest is just mental..

You can look at the guy and see that he has had no problem adding strength and mass in the S&C program, the question now is just going to be how doing so has affected his burst, his hip movement, and his ability to bend. I'm hoping that he can play at his current size and still be a consistent threat as an outside edge rusher, and not merely turn into the one of the large-but-slow-of-foot guys we have routinely seen placed in edge rusher roles.

Judging by the pictures from the link he carries 270 incredibly well. Looks lean and mean, which would suggest he'll have that strength/speed combo we all want so bad off the edge.

I saw him in town before he enrolled, and even at 18 years old, the young man was a specimen. Didn't look like an ounce of body fat and just a massive human being
