Box Score

HOOVER, AL - Alabama baseball fell to third-ranked LSU, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon in a 13-inning affair, the second of the three game series between the two SEC foes. With the loss, Alabama moves to 15-15 overall and 4-8 in the conference.

"You have got to make plays," said Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard. "We had multiple opportunities to win today's game, and we didn't do it. Somehow, some way we have to find a way play better baseball, and we have to find a way to get hits in critical situations."

Alabama compiled another multi-hit effort, recording 14 total for the day, but also stranded 14 runners across the 13 innings of play. The Tide was led on offense by Georgie Salem and Mikey White, with both players recording identical 3-for-7 days, with a double and a run apiece. Salem also added a stolen base for his team-leading 11th swipe of the season.

The Tide remained in the game all afternoon thanks to a solid effort from the pitching staff. Starter Geoffrey Bramblett tossed 5.0 innings and allowed four runs, but limited the Tiger offense in some key situations. Bramblett was followed up by Ray Castillo, who pitched a career-high 5.2 innings of relief, allowing just four hits while striking out five total to keep the two teams knotted up.

"Ray has been good," said Gaspard of his junior reliever. "Honestly, I'm very pleased with the pitching all weekend from our starters and our pen. Ray was terrific today; he pitched really well and gave us opportunities to win the game."

LSU started the scoring in the series finale, putting up two runs in the game's first inning. With one down, a single and then a triple brought across the first run. The next at-bat was an infield groundout to the right side that let the second run come across, giving the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.

Alabama countered in the home half of the first when two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Kyle Overstreet. The junior second baseman slapped a single to right to bring across two for the Tide. In the next at-bat, Mikey White added one more run on a single up the middle to score Casey Hughston and give Alabama the lead. The Tide followed White up with another walk to load the bases, and then a Will Haynie single to center brought in the fourth and final run of the inning to put Alabama ahead, 4-2.

The two teams would remain scoreless until the fifth, when LSU would add two more to tie things up. A single and then a double by the Tigers added the first run, and the game-tying score came in the next at-bat when a wild pitch allowed the runner from second to score. Following the Tiger fifth, both team would remain scoreless in regulation, sending the game to extras for the second time in the series.

LSU would break the tie in the top of the 13th inning, drawing a one-out walk to start the run-scoring effort. An errant throw to second on a stolen base put the Tiger runner at third, and then a failed pickoff attempt to third base allowed that same runner to cross for the go-ahead score.

The Tigerswould follow up with a single and then that batter would advance to second on a passed ball. One pitch later,LSU would deliver a single up the middle to score their second run of the inning and move ahead 6-4. The Tide received a two-out double from Salem in the bottom of the 13th, but was unable to rally back for the win.

Alabama and LSU combined to play 38 total innings in the series after playing 16 innings in Thursday's series opener and 13 innings in today's contest. It marks the most innings ever played in a three-game series for Alabama. The previous mark came when Alabama played 36 innings at Mississippi State on April 11-12, 1969.

Next up for the Crimson Tide is a midweek game at Samford on Tuesday. The two teams are scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. CT start inside Joe Lee Griffin Stadium. The Tide and Bulldogs have met once already this season, with Alabama taking the 8-6 win on March 17.
