The Crimson Tide rallied to tie it in the 10th and then crossed the game-winner in the 11th

April 11, 2015

HOOVER, AL -
With a runner on second in the 11th inning, Mikey White delivered a single to the gap in right-center field to give Alabama baseball the 7-6 win over Georgia on Friday evening. With the victory, the Crimson Tide improves to 17-15 on the year and 5-8 in the SEC.

Alabama entered extra innings for the fourth time this season after Georgia was able to tie the game up in the ninth. The two teams battled in extras with the Bulldogs putting up two in the 10th and the Tide matching them with a pair of their own. In the 11th, Georgie Salem led off with a double down the left side and then Mikey White delivered a single to the gap on the seventh pitch of his at-bat to send the Crimson Tide home with the series-opening win.

"One thing this team showed is that we've got good fight," said Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard. "These guys will come back and compete really hard, and tonight it paid off in the end. That's what our team needed tonight -- to find a way to win a big game, and they did that. I'm happy for them, and I feel like this is something we can build on the rest of the weekend."

The two teams went to extra innings after Georgia was able to put together two hits in the ninth for the game-tying run. Alabama was unable to answer in its half of the final inning of regulation to send the Tide to extras for the third time in the last five games. In the top of the 10th, the Bulldogs would put two up to take the 6-4 lead.

Not to be outdone, the Tide would counter with two runs of their own thanks to three hits in the 10th. The frame was led off with consecutive singles before J.C. Wilhite followed suit with a single of his own to bring one across for Alabama. A sacrifice moved the runners over into scoring position and then a flyout to shallow center led to a play at the plate. Riley Colburn tagged from third with the throw beating him to the plate, but Colburn avoided the tag with a leaping dive over the catcher to score the tying run and send the two teams to the 11th.

Alabama scored the evening's first run in the bottom of the second, leading off with a single from Cody Henry and then a double to right from Wilhite to put two in scoring position. Chance Vincent stepped in one out later to deliver a single to left to bring one across for the early 1-0 lead.

Georgia would counter in the next inning, using two walks and then a single to bring in the tying run. The Tide bounced right back in the bottom half of the third to regain its lead on two hits. White led off the inning with a double and then Henry tripled over a leaping right fielder for his second hit of the night and the Tide's second run to give Alabama the 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs gained their first advantage of the night when a walk and a single put two on. Singles in each of the next two at-bats score the tying and go-ahead runs to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead in the fifth. The seventh inning saw the Tide regain its lead, posting a two-run frame of its own. With runners on first and second, Henry doubled to the gap in left-center field. The two-bagger brought home a pair for Alabama and moved UA ahead, 4-3, until the ninth when Georgia was able to tie things up.

The offense was led by Cody Henry, with the freshman providing a career-high four hits and coming up a home run short of the cycle. The first baseman also added a team-high three RBI on the night. White provided three hits, with the most important one coming in the 11th to bring across his lone RBI for the game.

Alabama will look to clinch the series with Georgia tomorrow afternoon. The two teams are scheduled for a 3 p.m. start on SECN+, with the Tide sending junior righty Will Carter to the mound and the Bulldogs countering with junior left-hander Ryan Lawlor.
