Actually, a good knockout hook doesn't work by brute force. A punch directly to the face won't work. It has to catch the jaw just right and rotate the neck, twisting the spinal column in the cervical region, sending a cascade of signals to the brain and it's lights out. Two things saved the bear. The enormous neck muscles they have and the guy is 73, after all. It was still enough for the bear to turn tail and run.
