Alabama has picked up its first class of 2018 commitment in offensive tackle Dare Rosenthal, AL.com has confirmed.

The 6-foot-7, 290-pound Rosenthal is from Ferriday High School in Ferriday, La. He is not yet rated by the recruiting services. He will be a sophomore in high school this fall.

Taking a commitment from a HS freshman is too early IMO. Hope the guy continues to develop and I'm sure many other schools are going to offer as well.

Great addition! Yes, it's early and he has a long time to change his mind, but he's obviously extremely talented and you can't teach size. Looks like a great OT. Roll Tide!

A 6'7 290 pound sophomore?? He may be better fit for the basketball team if he is that big going into his 10th grade year! Shoot he could our the 6'10" 265 pound center, the strength presence we been missing inside by the time he graduates! ;)

I have see him listed at 6'6, 6'7 and 6'8 in varoious places.

Seems like there would be a little more consistency on this. :conf2:

Great get for the good guys, nonetheless.

Well, rather than fully banking on a kid committing this early and expecting him to stick, a main point for a school who offers and gets a commitment this early may be that they were "first to show interest". In some cases that might be a positive factor down the road when a kid`s recruiting really heats up. Who knows though, this kid and his family could well be rabid Bama fans (?).

There was a Cali QB that committed to Kiffin and USC as a 8th or 9th grader a few years ago. He was in the 2015 class and did not sign w/ USC since the offer was no longer there due to he did not develop the way they thought. This is the danger taking a commitment from a 9th grader IMO.

After all, we don't know how big he'll be when he's a freshman. He might shrink and end up at 6'3" ;-) Seriously though, it is really really early.

I think the whole prior to high school thing is a bit much, but once someone is in high school? I'm not sure that's going too far, especially if you consider EEs and so on. Heck, my sister graduated high school when she was 16. All athletes are not equal and if Saban and the staff think he warrants an offer this early, I'm not inclined to argue.

If they want to change rules to say you can't recruit a guy until he's a sophomore or something then fine, but really what's the main issue here? That a freshman got offered? It happens with some regularity, I guess it's that he committed this early in the game?

Let's clarify that one for you from personal knowledge. True, the youngster in question never developed into a 5-star QB, but he did not have his offer from USC withdrawn, either; Sarkisian would've honored it, but the young man saw the writing on the wall when Ricky Town decommitted from 'Bama to stay in California and play in LA. In fact, young David Sills V - the 13-year-old USC commit - had hopes of reconnecting with Kiffin at Alabama, but no offer was made during his visit last fall, and he signed eventually with West Virginia, where I understand he has a 40% shot to be their starting QB as a true freshman.

Re: *** 2018 OL Dare Rosenthal Commits to Alabama***

the difference between QB and OL or DL is Qb's have to have the skill sets to do well. OL and DL must must have the Size and Feet. Its easier to work on Feet than a Qb Skill set. Also, Moses the kid thats committed to LSU has already matured and other kids are catching up to him. This will be the same with Dare as was the case with Fluker who dominated because he was so big. Moses is really really good ,but I'm willing to bet that someone else passes him as the best player and they are barely on the radar right now. Blake Barnett ended up better than every Qb besides Rosen for UCLA ,but was barely seen in the top 150.

Re: *** 2018 OL Dare Rosenthal Commits to Alabama***

The early 247 Sports composite for Dare are in. He is rated the # 1 player in Louisiana , # 3 at the position of OT, and the # 11 overall player in the country for the 2018 class. Things could change as they often do, but that is quite impressive!

If his ratings stay the same, imagine the corndog nation losing their collective minds knowing the #1 player in the bayou state will be in Tuscaloosa.
