Surrounded by his former coaches and general manager Ozzie Newsome, gritty veteran linebacker Jarret Johnson retired with the Ravens during a news conference Wednesday at team headquarters.

"He was a down lineman, we had no idea what position he would play for us, could he play Rush? Could he play Sam? Could he play inside linebacker? Was he big enough to play defensive end?" said Newsome, recounting drafting Johnson in the fourth round in 2003 as a college defensive lineman and two-time team captain out of Alabama. "We didn't know, but we knew JJ was a football player. That was the reason we ended up drafting him. What we came to find out about JJ is not only did he fit the term, 'He's a football player,' but he was a tempo-setter.

"He set the tempo in our locker room, he set the tempo in our classroom, he set the tempo out on the practice field and he definitely set the tempo for us on Sundays. From the very first day, he became one of the guys the other guys would follow."

Johnson had expressed his desire to retire with the Ravens after playing the past three seasons for the San Diego Chargers.
