They also didn't have anything to gain. At some point, a coach has to realize the comeback isn't happening and try not to get his QB injured. Notice Mett didn't even acknowledge Les Miles when he walked off the field.

yeah, that was a really low class move by miles. i don't even know if richt could pull off late game derp at that level

Mett will start some games for the Titans this year. Even if MM picks up the offense and can run it by game 1 (big if) he'll still miss a start or two with an injury. Mett's problem is that the Titans are going to tailor their playbook to MM's strengths, which are not Zach's strengths. Still, a multi-year career as a dependable #2 quarterback is not a bad gig.
