so i've been off the grid for a few weeks and come back to this and nothing on tidefans?

I see from media matters that Fox barely covered it but it's got to be out there everywhere else

Jim Bob Duggar was campaigning for Senate while saying "incest should be punishable by death" all while knowing his son had been molesting his daughters

Josh Duggar, the molester, has been running the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council, you know the group that tells us to be afraid of gays because they are pedophiles. I guess it's ok though, they were girls so at least he's not gay.

Mike Huckabee comes to their defense on facebook to be slammed by his own followers.

Now Hulu has pulled the show and TLC is dumping them too while advertisers run away as fast as they can.

so what does the tidefans crowd think?

Never heard of the guy, but child molesters deserve just about whatever society cares to dish out to them.
And I say that because I live with the carnage child molesters have wrought in the lives of people around me. The wreckage is sometimes unbelievable.

I think the Duggars are vile and disgusting humans, knowing this was going on and merely praying and forgiving. I'm sorry, but that is not enough. Josh Duggar should have been prosecuted, not hidden and protected by money, power, influence and/or Jesus.

Not defending the Duggar's - they weird me out - but from the little I've read he was 14 when this happened. Not excusing it, just saying that some of the comments I see come across as if people are thinking an adult did this stuff.

I wonder many parents would really turn their 14-year old in to the police for this.

I haven't really kept up with the story outside of people talking about it at work because I've never watched the show, but I thought I heard they filed a police report and he was sent to a juvenile counseling center.

Yeah, CA, the kid was 14/15. I hope he got counseling and that the girls did as well. Not sure as I've heard conflicting reports.

I don't like the Duggar's religion. Not sure if they are nice and misguided or weird and creepy or both.

I also don't like that someone dug up old reports somewhere about this. For what purpose? To get the Duggars off the air and show them in a bad light? Probably? To get the girls help or to stop an ongoing crime? I seriously doubt it. And at what cost to the victims, who had no control over what happened and had no control over this going public or even their parents' decision to go public with a show?

Frankly, unless they were trying to stop an ongoing crime I think no more of the person that made this public than I do of Josh Duggar or his parents.

Yeah, I'm not following the story or anything, but I've read a few links about it, and this is my thought for the most part.

I get where people see the hypocrisy in daddy Duggar running on a family values campaign and saying whatever he did about incest. But, what was he supposed to say?
"Well, come on now, incest isn't THAT bad, is it?"
Or, "Well, incest is bad but I have a 15 year old son who committed incest last year."
It doesn't sound like they "covered it up" as much as they treated their son like he was a minor. Which he was.

I can be convinced otherwise, though.

Daddy Duggar didn't have to go near that far. He could have said we need to punish to the full extent of the law. He could have waxed poetic about the need for counseling and supports for victims of these crimes. He chose to "go there" about the death penalty. For that daddy Duggar deserves every bit of criticism he receives. To me, his mind isn't right and he has given these issues little logical thought. Much of that is probably tied to his decision to enter the Gothardism universe and stay firmly under its smothering wing.

One article I read put the story in this way:

The parents waited a year before doing anything.
The juvenile counseling center they told the church elders he attended turned out to be just a cousin's house.
The parents had an Arkansas state trooper friend give him a "stern talking."

Someone else asked why the story is just now out. My understanding is one of the victims asked the documents be destroyed in order to save her identity.

I agree with you. I wasn't specifically referring to any particular quote - just his perceived hypocrisy.
I don't like people like him - specifically, politicians of any kind. But, I think people are wanting to see him involved in this big conspiracy that allowed his teenage son to molest his sisters at will. Like he "covered it up" by not - I don't know, making some public statement about it?
I always lean toward allowing everyone to be innocent until proven guilty. But, people see a conservative, family values politician and "incest" in the same story, and so many people jump to make him guilty until he is proven innocent.

As a Christians, one of the more disturbing parts of the story is how his church helped keep it on the down low. That just bugs me to death and you hear about this kind of thing all the time in churches. It gives all Christians, including me, a bad name and makes me understand why we are hated by so many. Christians are not above the law, and I wish churches would stop protecting criminals in the name of God. As a church, your morals and convictions should force you to inform the authorities, not hide from them. As Christians, all we are called to do is to pray for the person, ask God to forgive them and find it in our hearts to forgive them but, the laws of the land must be followed. I don't think God will look to kindly on members of the church who cover up crimes in his name.

EDIT: After reading the link provided by Gr8hope, I'm not sure what to think. Still don't like how the church protects some criminal acts but, that article makes some good points. I'm not sure how I would handle this if my son, when he is a young teenager, does something similar. I agree with that article that I probably wouldn't want to ruin his life at 14.

At the same time, their actions give the impression they didn't care about their daughters.

Would you want a 14 year old boy punished for molesting your daughter?

I agree. The comments I've seen come from the Duggars and their defenders seems to be much more concerned with Josh and his future than with the girls he victimized. Unfortunately, some of these fundamentalist sects don't view women as being as important as men. Some of them actively look for reasons to assign blame to the female victims in cases like this.

Like Muslims, for instance.
