Once Bobby Williams "coaches him up" we will be lucky if he doesn't fall down on the way out to kick a field goal.

Well even if he can't hit between the uprights he should at least send it out of the end zone. I get nauseous when we have to cover kicks. Too many bad memories.
Dittos!! Don`t think we`ll ever forget that one, if for no other reason than the boogs will never allow it. Come to think of it, I`m not sure we should ever forget it. Some of life`s best lessons are those that are the most painful.

Hmm... a fairly hefty dose of cynicism in this thread about a new commitment.

Well, one thing you can't diminish is that this kid had big time talent. Welcome aboard, Eddy!! I'm excited to have you.

Here's looking forward to great things!

Welcome! He shows the leg strength to get touch backs on kickoffs and possibly hit the 50+ FGs. Plus he's from a soccer background instead of a linebacker convert.

I think all of us have been frustrated with our place kicking and kick offs. We seem to recruit top talent and then they implode when they get to campus. Remember the Kick Six does not happen if we hit our field goals earlier in the game. How different would the Ole .... game been if we don't miss that field goal. I realize that we were playing with an injured kicker last year, but we have overcome other injuries. I have always thought we need a kicking specialist coach on the staff. We have and Assistant, to the Assistant, of the Co-Nutritionist. Please lets find a coach who can take these world class legs and make them NFL Ready legs.

Football welfare won't allow it. They limit the number of coaches in the same way they limit the number of scholarships. Remember, we have to give the UAB's of the world a chance...

Agreed, but to me if kicking and special teams make up 1/3 of your gameplan while the TE position occupies maybe 10% of your offensive gameplan, it stands to reason if I am building a coaching staff that I would hire coaches with kicking backgrounds and teach them to coach TEs if necessary rather than the other way around. Having a TE coach but not having a dedicated kicking coach has never made much sense to me.

That`s an interesting perspective. Would be very interesting, I think, to hear Coach Saban (and others for that matter ) address it.

I actually adopted that mentality briefly, due to some frustration or what not but I suppose that was before the 2009 championship and stellar play from Javy and Tiffin on special teams.

For instance, these kickers do have people that work with them, it just can't be Alabama coaches on Alabama's dime. Do we think a full time coach really "fixes" the issues that Foster had, or apparently the issues that Griffin's injury caused? I'm not so sure. Don't forget, Alabama managed to land one of the best punters and he sure seems to be handling himself ok.

I would like a full time special teams guy, sure, but Alabama has someone doing three things at that position really. Recruiting, coaches special teams, and tight ends. Let's not forget, this guy used to be Michigan State's head coach, so we can assume he knows a little something about football.

I am not sure it's clear he's either doing his job poorly, or that Alabama could afford to give up what else he's doing. We measure things by championships and championship level, but that 2009 championship is not won without excellent special teams play, think about much they contributed, and that was a special teams squad coached by Bobby Williams. I honestly think we're just witnessed the trials and tribulations of trying to win a championship every year, you can't afford small mistakes, you can't afford a kicker to get hurt, and you can't afford to recruit the wrong guys. It will happen though...

Re: ***2016 K Eddy Pineiro (JUCO) commits to Alabama***

Coaching special teams is about way more than the two guys who actually put shoe to ball. It's about protections, coverage, and personnel selection, in addition to the P and the PK.

While I haven't been pleased with the results in those areas, especially KO coverage (and I do think Williams bears responsibility there), I don't think the PK woes of the past several years are due to coaching of the technical aspects of place kicking and punting.

I'm unaware of any team, college or pro, that has a staff member who coaches kicking technique. It might be interesting to see what would happen if someone did. But I have to think that if 175 or so college and pro head coaches are unanimous (or nearly so) on a point, there's got to be a reason.

There's no need to coach kicking technique. The kid got a schollie based on his ability to do that at a high level.

I agree with you on the other aspects (coverage, etc). :)

10%? Just because he isn't catching balls doesn't mean he isn't part of the game plan. I do get your point though.
