High School Coach Explains Why Ronnie Harrison Was "Under-Ranked" as a Recruit

Click

There was an understanding among Florida State University School coaches during Ronnie Harrison's senior season last year.

"We kind of had a rule that when the ball crossed the 50 he went in [at defensive back]," Florida State University School coach Jarrod Hickman said during a phone interview.

Otherwise, Harrison primary focused on playing quarterback aside from important games and/or difficult matchups during which his team needed him on defense — whether at cornerback or safety.

Harrison played less than 12 snaps on defense in some games, Hickman said.

That was the reason for Alabama's promising freshman safety posting just modest totals of 39 tackles, five pass breakups and no interceptions as a senior.

Impressive young man. Sounds like with his work ethic he will be a great one before it's all said and done.

Sounds like some people were trying to keep the kid off the radar.

Good for him accepting his role knowing it was best for the team and himself long term.

In high school the best athlete usually plays quarterback. Teams do what needs to be done to win. Coach Bryant often recruited them for DB's.

You ain't seen small town football until you've seen a big guy take a direct snap because he's the best athlete on their roster. :D

I like the way this all sounds. Seems like a kid who'll completely buy into the process as mentioned on another thread.

Hear only good things about this guy, hope he does well. For those that know his game more, what former bama safety does he remind you of?

If he's looking like the starting dime DB, who would that put out there?

Nickel - Jackson or Smith
Dime - Harrison

Isn't Jackson at safety or am I dreaming that ? I would expect Humphrey to get some PT at nickel.

Nickel - toss up between M. Smith, Hootie, and J Washington. This might depend on the type of team we are playing against. A run-heavy spread team still means we play nickel, but we might prefer a guy like hootie for better run support, where against a pass-heavy spread team we could see the other guys - or even Humphrey come in and Brown or Jones slide into nickel like Javy used to do
