He didn't attack McCain's positions of today. He attacked his war record, while he heroically stayed stateside with a bad foot. (Except he can't remember which one.) No one would have paid any attention if he'd attacked McCain's senate record, but that's not what he did...
True, I would have preferred that he did but he has started the conversation. That is what I like about Trump. I don't support his candidacy but he stands up for what he believes. We need honesty from all politicians, not spin. That has been absent for too long. I would never vote for the socialists, Marxists, progressives, or whatever they call themselves but I respect Bernie Sanders for telling the truth about what he is.

I can't argue with that at all. However, the more I hear from him about what he believes, the uglier it gets, IMO...

I agree. The problem is that what he believes sounds like a 2 AM rant from some drunk at Waffle House. With about the same level of depth.

Anyone who wants to see what the 4F mystery foot Trump is comparing himself to, needs to read this: LINK
I dont think that there is any debate that McCain had an extremely harsh time, to say the least, after his capture and Trump got off relatively easy having a medical deferment. I respect McCain tremendously for what and how he endured his torture at the hands of the commies but cant really fault Trump for using a medical deferment if he qualified for it.

I would feel better about it if he could even remember which foot it was. When questioned, he snarled he couldn't remember and to "check his record." Even if he had been drafted, one foot or the other would have suffered a bullet wound. Of course, if the wound had powder burns, it would have been a general discharge, so that would have taken him out of the race anyway. I hope I'm conveying my contempt for him... :D

As do I with McCain. As a fellow Vietnam veteran, it is my considered and educated opinion that John McCain was no hero.

Personally, I see no reason to "flame" over your comments. I parsed his statements similarly and even thought about other nationally recognized heroes like Audie Murphy and Alvin York in comparison to John McCain. In my opinion, McCain doesn't hold a candle to Murphy and York, among others, as war heroes go.
Another hero, worthy of the name, was McCain's commander at the Hanoi Hilton and never sought any recognition or political gain

Don't forget Alabama's own, Jeremiah Denton http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/29/u...-jr-war-hero-and-senator-dies-at-89.html?_r=0

The prisoner of war had been tortured for 10 months and beaten repeatedly by his North Vietnamese captors in recent days, and there were threats of more if he did not respond properly when the propaganda broadcast began. Haggard but gritty, Cmdr. Jeremiah A. Denton Jr. slumped in a chair before the television cameras.

Pretending to be blinded by the spotlights, he began blinking — seemingly random spasms and tics. He answered interrogators’ questions with a trace of defiance, knowing he would be beaten again and again, but hoping that America would detect his secret message in Morse code.
To a question about American “war atrocities,” the captured pilot said: “I don’t know what is happening in Vietnam because the only news sources I have are North Vietnamese. But whatever the position of my government is, I believe in it, I support it, and I will support it as long as I live.”

The North Vietnamese, who lost face, were even more outraged when they learned that Commander Denton, in the Japanese-taped interview broadcast on American television on May 17, 1966, had blinked out “T-O-R-T-U-R-E.” It was the first confirmation that American prisoners of war were being subjected to atrocities during the Vietnam War.

that's a hero

Read Denton's book, that's how I knew about Risner. Solid men.
I have a copy, signed by Denton. I met him back in the late 90's, he was running a charity that took advantage of boats that returned empty to Costa Rica. Belize and the like after they dumped their loads of banana's and other produce. He'd get used school desks, texbooks, medical supplies, whatever he could and ship them down so their schools could have supplies. Great man.

His book should be required reading

i read his book, when hell was in session, several times as a young teenager. never could fathom what those guys went through. that was one of the many inspiring stories that i remember from that book.
yeah, that and what kind of a person Jane Fonda really is. That stuck with me forever, even though he kept her name out of it all the way to his death we know it was her, True evil

Seems like Trump has dug his hole a little deeper, with his assertion (to a bunch of evangelicals) that he never asks for forgiveness, just tries to do something right to balance off his wrong. Sheds some light on his pronouncements...

reading an opinion piece from a New Zealand newspaper on the state of the current GOP. Thought about posting as it's own topic but the following comment seems relevant here

Trump personifies everything the rest of the world despises about America: casual racism, crass materialism, relentless self-aggrandisement, vulgarity on an epic scale. He is the Ugly American in excelsis.

You might expect a tycoon/buffoon cross to be a political player in some Latin American failed state or backward former Soviet republic, places with no democratic tradition or public institutions that have stood the test of time and no such thing as "the people" in the sense of an educated, civic-minded citizenry.

The fact that so many Republicans are comfortable with the thought of this monumentally unqualified individual in the Oval Office shows how warped the party has become. To borrow the rhetoric of their candidates, the party is now an existential threat to America's leadership of the global community.
