It's about development at this level. Sure scouting is getting better, but those 17 blue chip recruits will only be special if they can learn a two star recruit's work ethic. It's up to this coaching staff to instill that in them, and honestly that's one of the areas we seem to be falling off at.

There is probably not a staff in the country that does a better job of player development than Alabama. They know what to do, how to do it and have the resources. Saban has an incredible track record. Bama has not only been the best they have dominated the past 7 years in the midst of the most competitive era in college football history, in the best conf and best division in football. He is 6-1 in championship games (NC 3-0, SECC 3-1) and 4-2 in 1 vs 2 matches (Bama was 2-1 in its entire history prior to Saban, Coach Bryant being 1-1). Bama has not lost more than 1 SEC game in 6 of the last 7 years. Arguably, no one has done as well in college football history. They are however imperfect, like all staffs before.

I know some are disappointed that Coach Saban's record is not perfect. But the lack of understanding by some Bama fans who are now taking shots at Coach Saban is amazing.

I agree that work ethic is necessary at this level. I am just not sure that you can instill a work ethic at this age if that is not already well under way before they arrive on campus. This is where getting to know the player an his parents/coaches makes a huge difference. Too often coaches overlook clear character flaws in the pursuit of raw talent. They hope to change the kids when they arrive. Saban may be better than most at molding young men, but even he has no idea which will listen and learn, and which will not.

You need talented players to win championships, but talent without work ethic won't get you home. Still, 17 five star players on a single team is crazy.

OTOH, some 2* players receive that ranking because they have a poor work ethic.

It's not always about work ethic. Often times, the issue comes with Saban said on Friday. Coaches have to get the players to buy into the team. They can't worry about themselves. They have to be team-oriented more than consumed with himself.

A great example of a player learning to buy-in appears to be Robert Foster. Link

Also, Ronnie Harrison's high school coach gave a good reason for why Ronnie wasn't ranked higher in the 2015 class. It's something to remember when wondering why a very talented player didn't get a higher ranking by the recruiting services.

And to Hickman, Harrison being just a part-time defensive player combined with Harrison deciding not to attend any Rivals recruiting camps beyond his sophomore year of high school contributed to the current Tide freshman not being ranked higher as a recruit by sites such as Rivals and ESPN.

ESPN rated the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Harrison, who impressed Alabama coaches enough during the spring that he will enter the fall as the Tide's second-team free safety and first-team dime back, as just the 25th-best safety in this year's recruiting class.

"For Ronnie, it was never about having to prove himself to the guys that give out the stars and the rankings," Hickman said of Harrison, who was a consensus four-star recruit. "It was more so about just proving what he can do on the field in his play and to his teammates. ... He got invited to the Under Armour combine and the U.S. Army and all those things, and we talked about going. And if he had gone and performed, he would have been a five-star kid and probably rated extremely high, but he just chose not to do those.

"He had a goal from Day One to be on campus somewhere. And once he went to Alabama, he knew where he wanted to be. So the All-Star games and things were fun, but he didn't need to do those."

If players do not buy in, regardless of talent level and quality of coaches, a team will not be a championship team.

It all starts with recruiting. You can't make chicken salad out of... Nevermind.

So Bama has more 5*s than the next two teams, Georgia and Texas A&M, combined. And Bama as many 5*s as Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, and Tennessee have combined. That's impressive.

Another argument by some teams is that some players don't become 5*'s until CNS started recruiting them. Almost like how some umpires wouldn't call borderline pitches strikes if Pete Rose wasn't offering on them.

these articles crack me up... which is a better a player: a first year true freshman 5 star player or a fifth year senior starting for his 2nd or 3rd year who was ranked as a 3 star coming out of high school? in most cases, the 5th year senior will probably prove to be the better player.

I had a scout tell me several years ago that a 5 star ranking meant the player had the raw skills, coaching, and experience to be able to contribute to a Div 1 program immediately (not necessarily start, but be able to compete for a starting spot and push the starters to be better). He said that some 3 and 4 star players could have much more upside/potential than even some 5 star players, but may have been from smaller schools and had less coaching (to prepare for college) and/or less playing time and that they could be better NFL prospects after several years in a Div 1 program. Some teams that hold onto players for the full 4 and 5 years can do quite well with 3 star players. The downside to signing so many 5 star players is they rarely stay past 3 years.
