He's the new DC at North Carolina, and his history suggests that he'll be pretty good as a DC.

"I feel like at times I got tarred and feathered erroneously, because I think a lot of people didn't do their homework," Chizik told the AP. "There were a lot of assumptions made that were absolutely false and incorrect. I stand by everything that I did. I have absolutely nothing to hide and I never will because I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I always did it right."

I doubt I'm alone, but I've always thought Chizik was hired as a puppet who was too naive to know the shadiness of some things that have gone on there - and would never question his success about it. The fact is this: the guy did NOTHING to commend himself as a head coach of Auburn before he was hired. He was 5-19 at Iowa State, and remember that he took over ISU in early 2007 after their most sustained success in program history. Keep in mind that Dan McCarney won nearly as many games (4-8) in his last year as Chizik won in two. This nothing program won seven games a year in five of the previous six years, so it's not like GC inherited a bad team.

NOTHING commended this guy to be an SEC head coach.

And it's part of why I've always been suspicious.

I agree Bill; if he did not understand the pecking order and payment system during his tenure at auburn under Tubs then he pretty much got what he deserved.

He wasn't tarred and feathered, he was "0-fered" - as in 0-8 in the SEC his last year. Shoot, that'll even get you fired at Vandy.

Has Alabama ever gone winless in the SEC?
Went 0-10 in 1955 (48 total points for the year, or thereabouts, if memory serves) so definitely winless in the SEC. Don't know about any other years.

All that contemplates on-field results. Vacated wins not considered.

That is an interesting perspective that honestly I have never thought anything about. If I follow what you are getting at, would it be fair to say Gus is in that same mold...High school coach, coordinator, and a year a Ark. St....seems pretty under whelming too. Or is it that he knows very well the "system" and is well versed at doing it, and that was the plan all along?
I did think it was a little strange he left after a huge season, only waited one year until the bottom fell out, and then returned as the "guru" of college football.

I think the ONLY reason he was hired because he knew exactly what goes on in the smelly village on the plains. He got lucky and bought a player of a lifetime and won a title. I think Gus left because he knew the wheels was about to come off and wanted to get out while he could and not ruin his rep. They brought Gus back because they knew he would keep the system going.

I have always got the feeling that Chizik was an honest guy but was genuinely naive and unaware. The AU powerbrokers didn't hire him because of his great head coaching ability or potential.

On the other hand, I think Gus knew exactly what kind of shenanigans were going on before he got there, while he was there with Chiz, and what's going on now. I think he's disingenuous, and generally full of crap and himself. He has the slimy "used car salesman" kind of vibe to me.

Exactly, and the same thing can be said about Musnochamp.

For a guy with the "defense genius" tag, Chiz sure made some bone head hires on that side of the ball. Ted Roof and "Pornstache" VanGorder as DC's. And I seem to recall that the 2011 and 2012 teams were a couple of the worst tackling teams in the entire SEC.

We'll see how good a DC he really see at NC. At tha barn he had a head coach who was defense first and his teams were always good on that side of the ball. At Texas he had the advantage of having better talent than the other team more often than not. We will find out about Muschump also next year. It will be interesting to see how he does with the offense Gussie runs and his offense first priority.

I realize the Chiz is not the sharpest tool in the box but no one could have been there before and NOT know the shady goings on. I agree he was hired to look the other way and keep the system going. He can say he never did anything wrong and probably be correct. I will never believe he can say "I never knew anyone was buying players and giving the free passing grades." If he did not know what everyone (except NCAA) knew then he is worse than an idiot.

If anyone has a right to complain about being booted from auburn it is tuberville. He is one of the only coaches, if not the only one I'm not sure, to beat bama more times than we beat him, he is one of few auburn coaches to go undefeated, and even their "greatest" coach (dye) can't claim either of those points. Tubby was let go to because he wouldn't play ball with lowder, dye, mcgregor, and yella wood man's sneaky ways. Seriously how many teams would've fired tuberville like auburn did?

He really wasn't fired; he gave them the finger and walked. After Jetgate he got a clause in his contract that allowed him to walk with the balance of his contract if they talked to another coach about replacing him while Tubbs was still under contract.

Guess what Lowder did.

All the "negotiations" were just stalling tactics to let Auburn try to salvage some dignity, yknow, saying that they decided to pay the balance of the contract because of the goodness of their hearts, that sort of crap.

This. Although the writing was on the wall in 2008 and Auburn power brokers knew the tables had turned on Tuberville as far as the Iron Bowl was concerned. Still, schools don't normally fire coaches with the success Tuberville had had after just one bad year.
IMO, Chizik was way in over his head. It was a really bad hire with the exception of him having Gus as his OC. The NC in 2010 had little to do with Chizik.

My understanding - what I was reading at the time - was that it blew out of proportion because some bigwig (not Lowder, but one of his sycophants) inquired of bringing Houston Nutt to Auburn - he had just completed his first year at Ole Miss. Word got to Nutt, which he told Sexton - who told Tuberville, who decided to cash in on the escape clause and get the hell out of Dodge.

I don't KNOW if that is what happened, but it is what I heard at the time. I think this was a case of "you violated the contract, gimme my money and I'm gone" coupled with "Oh yeah, you're fired!"
