Off topic but:As I heard that story, it was Joe Paterno, not Woody. And, he suggested that Coach Bryant check out Namath because he didn't think Namath would have the grades to get admitted to Penn St. Not because he didn't need another QB. Otherwise, Paterno would have signed Joe himself.
Well fwiw Phil savage says he predicts Coker will be the starter
OK, some coach of some team somewhere couldn't sign Namath for some reason and suggested that Coach Bryant sign him.
There. Fixed it for us.
If that was the case, don't you think word would leak out from various sources?Any chance Saban knows who the QB will be, but isn't going to reveal that to keep Wisconsin from preparing for them?
The issue with this type of plan is that it's not a true competition, at least past a certain point... and players know it. Every position on the field is a battle... and guys have to know they can be replaced (at any time) or many will get lax. Using this system you MIGHT get a better QB, but I guarantee you'll lose whatever you gain at other positions.Agreed 100%. Name a starter at the beginning of spring, hand him the reins, and if someone beats him out between then and game 1 then the team is better off. I'm not sure the continual flirting with potential QB transfers and constant speculation among the media and fans if good for the team. QB is a unique and important position that does not need to be continually looking over his shoulder for fear of making a single mistake will get him yanked. We've had QB's in the past that played with that mentality and it was not good for them nor the team.
I don't think he knows who the starter is yet, but I do give a bit of gravitas to the fact he may not let it out until the first snap against Wisconsin.Any chance Saban knows who the QB will be, but isn't going to reveal that to keep Wisconsin from preparing for them?
That only works when you have QB's with different styles (i.e. one is a runner the other is a thrower) such as the Zow/Watts situation in 2001 against AU.Any chance Saban knows who the QB will be, but isn't going to reveal that to keep Wisconsin from preparing for them?
I would be surprised if this were the case. I think he wants to let it play out for a couple more weeks. He may have an idea on who will start, but I don't think he has settled on one person yet.Any chance Saban knows who the QB will be, but isn't going to reveal that to keep Wisconsin from preparing for them?
The question becomes, why is a player allowed to slack off after they become a starter and remain a starter? I agree with you that it has happened but it should not be so. No player, including the QB, should be able to get away with that. I'm not fond of the NFL mentality in college....The issue with this type of plan is that it's not a true competition, at least past a certain point... and players know it. BTW, this is what some of us dislike about Saban's current philosophy. Unfortunately, after fall camp, our coaches seem to identify the 35-40 guys who are going to play during the season and shut the competition down after that (this is the way the NFL usually handles things). Last year, IMO it showed up with Christion Jones. His performance returning kicks midway into the season became worse and worse... and someone should've replaced him. Yet, he won that job earlier in the year... and that's who they continued to go with.
The reality - the person getting the most reps with the starters is going to put the team in the best position to win, so a player at any level has to really mess up to lose his job mid-season unless someone else really steps up.The question becomes, why is a player allowed to slack off after they become a starter and remain a starter? Christion Jones was not putting the team int he best position to win, though. Probably why in his media day presser Kiffin made the comment Ardarius Stewart was becoming the #3 WR until he got injured. The reality - the person getting the most reps with the starters is going to put the team in the best position to win, so a player at any level has to really mess up to lose his job mid-season unless someone else really steps up.
he wouldnt be wasting reps with the others.Any chance Saban knows who the QB will be, but isn't going to reveal that to keep Wisconsin from preparing for them?
I`d lay odds that he`ll make his decision after the next scrimmage. But he won`t let on who it is, even though it may be obvious.he wouldnt be wasting reps with the others.
no chance.
Agreed. There have been some cases where I just could not figure out why the starter kept his spot despite being outplayed. The issue with this type of plan is that it's not a true competition, at least past a certain point... and players know it. Leon Brown was another... watching the LSU replay the other day, it's like he was singlehandidly trying to sabatoge our chance to win that game in OT.Agreed. There have been some cases where I just could not figure out why the starter kept his spot despite being outplayed.
