Eston Kohver, an Estonian Intelligence official, was investigating smuggling along the Russian-Estonian border. Someone had set up a 5 September 2014 meeting near the border.
The FSB went across the border, grabbed Kohver, took him to Moscow, charged him with spying, arms smuggling and violating border regulations
Residents nearby heard explosions and gunshots that night. Investigators the next day found residue of Russian flashbangs and shell casings on the Estonian side of the border.
Russia says Kohver was arrested on the Russians side of the border.
After a secret trial, he was sentenced to 15 years at hard labor.
Estonia is a NATO member country.
The abduction happened two days after President Obama had made a speech in Estonia in which he declared NATO would defend Estonia's independence. (For the record, no, I do not believe the President bears any responsibility. I just think Putin was sending Estonia a message not to get too chummy with the west.)
Man, Putin/the Russians can be really crappy sometimes.
