Justin Scott Wesley’s playing career at Georgia may be over.
Dondrial Pinkins, who coached Scott-Wesley at Mitchell County High School, was told by Scott-Wesley “he was done playing,” in the aftermath of the fifth-year senior wide receiver leaving practice on Aug. 17 with a right knee injury, but that may be a fluid situation.
Scott-Wesley told him Tuesday night he wants to see how the healing process goes.
“The vibe I got from him was that decision may have been out of frustration,” Pinkins said. “He’s in the process of talking (to trainers) about how he’s going to respond to the rehab. After that, he’ll see how he feels. If he’s able to play, he may play or he may just sit out. At this moment it’s all dependent on how his body feels.”
Scott-Wesley’s 2013 season ended early due to a torn ACL in the same knee and he played just six games last season, making three catches. He had arthroscopic surgery in early July, but returned in time for the start of preseason practices.
“He’s dealt with a lot of injuries here lately,” Pinkins said. “He said he played last year a lot hurt. He’s been practicing a lot hurt this year. He said he doesn’t want to continue to do it if his body doesn’t respond positively. He didn’t give me an answer tonight on if he was going to continue to hang it up or whether he was coming back. He said he just wants to see how the process went and he’ll make a decision at a later date.”
Scott-Wesley was back on the practice field this week dressed like a student assistant coach. He’s talked to Pinkins about coaching high school football down the road.
“When one door closes, another opens!” Scott-Wesley wrote on his Instagram account Monday night with a photo that the Athens Banner-Herald tweeted out of him at practice on the sideline Monday dressed out like a coach. “That’s how God works! Blessed for the opportunity to learn and teach #CoachMeCoach.”
Georgia coach Mark Richt last met with reporters on Saturday, saying then: “I’m not sure we’ll see Justin for a while, if at all.” A team spokesman said Tuesday that Scott-Wesley’s status is “uncertain …at this time.”
