Press conference about MSU gunman has begun. MSU Communications Director Sid Salter is speaking.
Salter: Suspect is Fhu-Qui Kong "Bill" Nguyen, a student from Madison
MSU President Mark Keenum: At 10:10 a.m., university police received a call about a student in vicinity of drill field.
Student on drill field was threatening suicide and was threatening to harm other students. PD responded as active shooter
Call came to PD at 10:10, all units were in vicinity quickly and student was apprehended at 10:26, Keenum said.
Keenum: Swift action was taken by our police. Call came in as student threatening suicide and might harm others.
Keenum: No weapon. No shots were fired. No one is injured.
Keenum: Safety of our students is the #1 responsibility I have and this university has.
MSU Police Chief Vance Rice: At 10:10, we received a call from an office in Jackson, reported they were on phone with caller on drill field
Rice: Suspect was threatening homicide and suicide. When officers responded, suspect had left and gone to another building.
Rice: Located suspect at 10:26 and took him into custody. Didn't have a weapon on him and no shots were fired.
Keenum: Classes will resume at 2 p.m. "We are back to business as normal here at Mississippi State."
Salter: Addresses why MSU used term shooter if no gun recovered. Said when Univ. receives a credible threat, Maroon Alert process starts.
Salter: We don't wait around for someone to be injured, we start policy as soon as threat recognized.
Salter: New VP for student affairs becomes incident commander of crisis action team. Univ. will upgrade its responses to threats like this.
Salter: Can't release suspect's age. He is a freshman student from Madison. Will give more details when law enforcement clears.
Salter anticipates law enforcement will charge suspect but can't speak directly to what charges will be or what venue will be.
Salter: Determining credible threat is a process for law enforcement but will always err on side of caution.
Salter: We've drilled on shooter on campus for a long time, now we had that situation play out. We will learn from this in the future.
