Georgia seems like it will rely on freshmen wide receivers Terry Godwin and Michael Chigbu not only for early playing time but close to the top of the rotation at a position the Bulldogs are thin.
“Just with the lack of depth there, they’re going to have to take on a little more responsibility than even they thought at times,” said assistant coach Bryan McClendon, who moved from coaching running backs to receivers this offseason. “It’s kind of part of it and that’s where college football has gotten now.”
Senior Justin Scott-Wesley’s uncertain future with another knee injury means the Bulldogs will lean not only on returning receivers Malcolm Mitchell, Isaiah McKenzie and Reggie Davis, but Godwin and Chigbu.
McClendon sees the newcomers in a six to eight player rotation.
“Those guys are in it for sure,” McClendon said after Friday's practice. “Those guys have been able to come in and grasp kind of the grand scheme of things, grasping what to do, grasping how to do it.”
Kenneth Towns and Shakenneth Williams would seem to be in a group that took heavy losses in Chris Conley and Michael Bennett, both now in the NFL.
When pressed how many of that to six to eight he’s confident with, McClendon said: “I don’t know if you want me to answer that question. Nah, all those guys they’ve done well.”
Freshmen Jayson Stanley and Shaquery Wilson could also play this season, but McClendon indicated he wasn’t sure if it would be early in the season or maybe later.
“They have to prepare like they’re going to play just with the lack of depth,” he said.
Chigbu is a 6-foot-2 ,208-pound product of New Orleans.
The 5-foot-11, 174-pound Godwin, the prized five-star get from Callaway High, has impressed teammates with his playmaking ability.
“Some guys are naturally born to play certain positions,” McClendon said. “I think Terry was naturally born to play wide receiver. Things come naturally for him. The game of football comes very easy to him.”
