The first pass by Greyson Lambert ended in disappointment. The first pass by Brice Ramsey ended in disaster.
Lambert missed what should have been an easy touchdown to Malcolm Mitchell on Georgia's first play of the game and Ramsey just about snuffed any sliver of hope of a Georgia comeback when he threw an interception on Georgia's first play of the second half. Eddie Jackson's return for a touchdown gave Alabama a 31-3 lead.
The two quarterbacks combined to go 11-for-30 for 106 yards and three interceptions. Lambert was pulled from the game shortly before halftime, and Ramsey was then pulled after throwing his second interception with 5:47 to go in the third quarter.
After the game, Georgia head coach Mark Richt admitted he didn’t have an answer for the reopened scab that is the Georgia quarterback position.
“I would say we are just going to have to reevaluate everything, quarterback play, everything,” Richt said.
Lambert tossed his first interception in a Georgia uniform and had two fumbles, which Georgia recovered. He also had a stretch where he went 1-for-11 and finished 10-for-24 for 86 yards
“Some times it is your day, some times it isn’t. Some times you just gotta battle through all that stuff and overcome it and it just wasn’t our day,” Lambert said.
Mitchell and John Theus both continued to back Lambert, with Theus dusting off a common phrase when Lambert and Ramsey were battling to become the Georgia starter in fall camp.
“Like I’ve said all year, it doesn’t matter who we put back there, we have faith in our guys,” Theus said.
Essentially everybody in Georgia's locker room gave credit to the Alabama defense. Mitchell said Alabama ran what Georgia prepared for in practice this week.
Richt admitted he inserted Ramsey as a way to try and flip Georgia’s fortunes. The move failed. Ramsey was 1-for-6 with two picks as well as taking two sacks.
Ramsey was not made available for comment after the game, but Lambert wasn’t distraught over the loss or his relegation to the bench. His time at Virginia, where the team went 3-6 with him as a starter, prepared him for losses and bouncing back from a poor performance.
“It’s very tempting to go out there and get frustrated because things aren’t going your way,” Lambert said. “But as a quarterback, as a leader, as a guy who is trying to get things going you can’t get frustrated.
In addition to throwing ducks on their first pass attempts of the game, the duo also threw interceptions on their last play of the game.
For the Georgia quarterbacks, the day ended like it started.
Poorly.
