Tennessee quarterback Josh Dobbs vs. Georgia defense
Junior quarterback Josh Dobbs hasn’t led Tennessee to wins in big games this season, but he still is one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the SEC.
“He’s a guy that definitely has our attention,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said.
The 6-foot-3, 216-pound Alpharetta product is 7-7 as a starter spread out over three seasons. This will be his first start against Georgia, but he already jumped out to the coaching staff before the season.
“Watching back in the summer, I thought the guy he really changed their offense when he started playing the last half of the year last year,” Georgia defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt said.
He certainly can do a lot on offense.
Against Florida, Dobbs showed how he can impact a game. He rushed for 136 yards, passed for 83 and had a 58-yard touchdown catch on a double pass.
“He’s an athlete,” Georgia safety Quincy Mauger said. “He can catch, he can throw, he can run the ball. It’s definitely one of those things we have to keep an eye on and just execute.”
Dobbs scrambled for a 7-yard touchdown run last week against Arkansas but had no more rushing yards on his other six carries.
He rushed for 89 yards against Bowling Green. Against Florida, he took a design run 62 yards and later faked a handoff and ran up the middle for 29 yards
"He's a big guy, but he can move around,” Georgia outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins said. “He's quick. He can break through tackles. He can shake you. You just really have to keep your eyes on his waist and try your best to bring him down."
Dobbs is completing only 57.5 percent of his passes for 789 yards and five touchdowns with one interception.
“A scrambling quarterback with better speed, we have to be aware of the play-action,” nose guard Chris Mayes said. “
Added inside linebacker Jake Ganus: “Play-action, that’s all about eye discipline and knowing what your keys, what your coverage is. We’ve got to do a better job of that. Obviously, we’ve got to keep getting better in a lot of phases.”
