I really hate that teams have to travel so far for first round games. Fultondale has to travel to Mobile to play. What is the point in travelling 4 hours away for a first round game.
I did some figuring on the 5A games. The average travel is 130 miles one way. The shortest trip is 59 miles and the longest is 245. That's just absurd this early on. I was going to do the other classifications but haven't had time yet.

More figuring:

1A: 120 miles longest 234 shortest 36.4
2A: 151.9 miles longest 264 shortest 76
3A: 104 miles longest 200 shortest 37
4A: 147.8 miles longest 273 shortest 60.9
5A: 130 miles longest 245 shortest 59
6A: 139.7 miles longest 256 shortest 48.8
7A: 161 miles longest 257 shortest 92

renting charter busses almost make it seem worthless to get into the playoffs.

But it's not always like that as every 2 years or so they change who each region faces in round 1.

Region play is clearly the best way for the playoffs though. I've seen teams win one gamethe whole season in area play and make the playoffs which is crazy. I think next year the AHSAA will change the region matchups in round 1 and travel won't be as bad.

Of course the bigger classifications hardly ever change so they will have big travel every year, especially 6A and 7A because only the big cities will have these schools, but they have the money.

My HS, is playing tonight. They have a weird situation. If they win, depending on the results of the other game in the bracket then they may get a home game in round 2. Problem is, the local park uses the HS field for their games. It's playoff time for them and they are hosting games this Saturday. 8 games in one day on a field that will be drenched Friday night and again Saturday. The HS coach has to make a call on if they get to use the field or not but likely won't know his status of hosting till late Friday night waiting to find out an opponent. Then, if we lose tonight it won't matter. Definitely don't want the field destroyed by the park games with the chance of hosting a playoff game next week.

Geraldine had to come to my alma mater tonight (Winfield). 3+ hour drive on a school night. My youngest brother is having a great Sr year for Winfield.

On another note Winfield had a kid have a compound fracture of the ankle. He's having surgery tomorrow. Keep him in your prayers.

I'll add this too- a few years ago they put Winfield in the south. They had playoff games at Geneva & Mobile Christian. Both games were 5+ hour drives. This does need addressing. I'm not sure what the solution is for rural schools.

Walker hosted Scottsboro last night, which seems like a long drive for a first-round game. I don't know how well they normally travel, but with the distance and it being moved to a Thursday, they didn't fill up the visitors' section. I would expect that to be different this next week as Gardendale comes to town.

Yea with some games being moved up at the last minute a lot of the parents and the older crowd couldn't come with work today. I imagine it would have been hear full if it would have been tonight with no rain.

Craziest moment of the night so far, Flomaton returns a pick six for 98 yards on the last play of the game to beat New Brockton.

I'm about to update the games I can find.

You don't have to worry about giving the games for AISA 2A. We already know that winner.

I don't know how common this is, but 6A Region 5 teams were 4-0 in the first round: Walker, Homewood, Minor and Briarwood Christian.
Hope I didn't jinx anybody, especially Walker.

Yes it generally happens at least once a year.

Watched a really great game tonight between two top 10 3A teams. Colbert County scored late to beat Winfield 26-20. Pirates finished 10-2. My brother played lights out tonight on the DL. CC found success on the edges. It was really a great game.
