A five-run fifth propelled Gray to the eventual victory in game one

Nov. 4, 2015

TUSCALOOSA, AL -
A five-run fifth inning provided all the run support the Gray squad would need, as Gray came away with the 5-2 victory over Crimson in game one of Alabama baseball's Crimson-Gray World Series.

A three-run home run from Colton Freeman started up the scoring in the fifth, and then a two-out triple from Chance Vincent added two more to push Gray in front, 5-1. The pitching staff would take over from there, allowing just one more run before game's end.

Crimson gained the early lead in the third after rallying for a pair of one-out singles followed by a two-out single from Chandler Taylor for the game's first run. Gray collected only two hits through the first four innings of Crimson started Jon Keller before the team's five-run fifth.

The fifth frame began with a leadoff single from Will Haynie immediately followed by another single from Alex Webb. Freeman then took a two-strike pitch deep to right field to put Gray in front, 3-1. Two outs later, Connor Short knocked a single and was followed by a Cody Henry walk to put two on for Chance Vincent. A triple to the gap in right-center from Vincent cleared the bases for Gray and moved the lead to 5-1 after five full.

An infield groundout from Tanner DeVinny crossed Ryan Blanchard in the ninth to narrow the lead to 5-2, but a flyout in the infield ended things in Gray's favor. Ray Castillo claimed the victory on the night for Gray with 3.0 innings of work immediately after Gray starter Geoffrey Bramblett's exit.

Both starters tossed a solid game, with Bramblett tossing 4.0 innings of one-run baseball while striking out six. The junior righty was countered by Keller, who threw 5.0 innings and struck out seven while giving up five runs in the start. Prior to the fifth, Keller allowed just two hits and only three runners to reach base.

Following tonight's series opener, the two teams will match up once again on Thursday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. CT with a pair of righties taking the mound. Junior Nick Eicholtz is scheduled to start for the Crimson squad, and he is opposed by sophomore Jake Walters for Gray.
