The Gray squad sweeps the series 3-0

Nov. 6, 2015

TUSCALOOSA, AL –
In a wild third game of the Crimson-Gray World Series, the Gray squad came away with the series-clinching victory thanks to sophomore Connor Short’s walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.

A dramatic bottom of the ninth resulted in the walk-off victory for Gray, which had runners on second and third with only one out after a bunt by freshman Connor Wright. Hunter Webb then put the ball in play, grounding out to first. Sophomore Jake Walters, who was running on the play, scored on a wild throw home after the second out was recorded to tie the game. That brought Short to the plate, who came through with the single up the middle to score the series-clinching run.

Freshman Hunter Webb led off the bottom of the first for Gray, reaching base on a fielding error before stealing second. He then advanced to third on a single to center by Short and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Cody Henry to give Gray a quick 1-0 lead. Short moved to second on 6-3 fielder’s choice, and then came around to score when senior Georgie Salem singled to center, extending the advantage to 2-0.

The bottom of the first continued with a stolen base by Salem. Junior Will Haynie followed that up with another single to center field, bringing Salem home for the third run of the inning.

After holding Crimson scoreless in the top of the second, Gray tacked on to its lead in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Colton Freeman led off with a double, and two batters later, Hunter Webb knocked in a double to left for a 4-0 margin. Webb was then active on the bases, stealing third before coming home on a double by Short.

Crimson began to chip away at its deficit in the top of the third. Junior Taylor Poe reached second on a two-base error on a ball hit to center field, and then took third on a groundout. Poe was brought home by freshman Sam Finnerty for Crimson’s first run of the game.

Crimson added another run in the top of the fourth thanks to a leadoff double by senior Ryan Blanchard and an RBI single off the bat of Poe, making the score 5-2 Gray after four full innings. The score remained that way until the top of the seventh, when sophomore Chandler Avant hit a home run to lead off the top of the seventh for Crimson. Later in the inning, freshman Cobie Vance reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice. Junior Tanner DeVinny was able to make the most of the opportunity, recording a single to left field to trim Gray’s lead to 5-4.

In the top of the eighth Crimson came through with clutch hits to take the lead. Freshman Gene Wood reached on an error by the pitcher, and then moved to second on a 5-3 fielder’s choice. Avant then singled to drive in Wood, evening the score at 5-5. Later, Finnerty reached first on a fielder’s choice that cut down Avant at home. The freshman would score on a sacrifice fly by fellow rookie Chandler Taylor to make the score 6-5 in favor of Crimson.

Despite losing its earlier lead, Short's walk-off single in the ninth sealed the victory for Gray.
