Kirby's interviewed for jobs in the past, which indicates he is open to the idea.Is Smart looking for a head coaching job? Making what he does without the head coach responsibilities has to be sweet. And, I don't think every successful assistant is programmed to be a head coach (see Bud Foster at Virginia Tech).
One can hope! What if he ends up at LSU for a few years and does well, and then CNS retires? Do you think he tops the list?
I think you are right. However, after LSU fires Miles and fails to land Jimbo, I wouldn't be surprised to see them come knocking for Smart, as much for his connection to Saban as anything...[/QUOTE]
Interesting perspective, Earle. Almost like, "Well, if we can`t have Saban back, maybe this is the next closest thing". I think they would probably have an O coach at the top of their list, though. You sound like you`re sure Les is gone (?).
Maybe he goes to LSU, is wildly successful, then heads to the NFL for a couple of years, only to decide he likes college coaching better, and then ends up at Bama!IF he succeeded at LSU, he'd never be back at Bama. I think Miles proved that anyone who's a half-way decent coach can succeed at LSU, because of the amount of talent there. Miles was a so-so coach at Okie Lite and applied for our job every time it came open. Considering what he has had to work with, his results have been very bad. A young energetic coach like Kirby can tear up recruiting in that state and you don't really need much outside LA...
^^^^This. As successful as KS may eventually be, I think the who's want someone, at this point, who can field a potent offense - and has already done so successfully. I don't see them hiring an assistant coach anyway, especially a defensive one.I don't see it. LSU will go after an offensive minded coach, IMO.
That could never happen.Maybe he goes to LSU, is wildly successful, then heads to the NFL for a couple of years, only to decide he likes college coaching better, and then ends up at Bama!
I would love to see that. I think the pressure is a lot lower in Blacksburg than anywhere in the SEC (other than Nashville or Lexington) and I think he would do well there.I'd love to see CKS go to Va. Tech and get that program competing for ACC championships.
Like that could ever happen...Maybe he goes to LSU, is wildly successful, then heads to the NFL for a couple of years, only to decide he likes college coaching better, and then ends up at Bama!
Never thought about that facet of it Earle. They would think " this will be a slap in the face of Bama" . Hope that does not happen.I think you are right. However, after LSU fires Miles and fails to land Jimbo, I wouldn't be surprised to see them come knocking for Smart, as much for his connection to Saban as anything...
