ATLANTA-Greetings from Bobby Dodd Stadium, where Georgia and Georgia Tech will try to avoid adding a loss to their in-state rival to seasons that didn’t turn out like they expected.
Georgia’s Mark Richt is 7-0 here as head coach. Losing to a Yellow Jackets team that is 3-8 (its worst record since 1994 ) wouldn’t help considering the school has been silent on if Richt is returning next season.
Bulldog players want to get payback for losing 30-24 in overtime last year in Athens.
“This is the most important game on the schedule for me every year,” Georgia offensive tackle Kolton Houston said this week in Athens. “I don’t really like those guys. We’re going to get the Governor’s Trophy back up here.”
It’s a beautiful day for the last Saturday in November. Temperature two and a half hours before kickoff is 60 degrees with the forecast calling for mostly sunny this afternoon pushing 70.
Georgia quarterback Greyson Lambert started (and lost) here with Virginia last season. His rivalry game last year came against Virginia.
“Playing in a game like that where it might get a little chippy, a little dirty, those are the fun ones,” he said. “Those are the ones you remember.”
--Some pregame tidibts:
--It's an ACC crew doing this game in Atlanta, with the referee Ron Cherry.
--It looked unlikely all week for wide receiver/punt returner Isaiah McKenzie to play today due to the foot injury he sustained last week. Indeed, he is not on the travel roster. McKenzie has scored three touchdowns in the last two games.
Other notes from the travel roster: tailback Nick Chubb isn't playing of course but he was included in the 70. Cornerback Devin Bowman is not. Defensive tackle Trenton Thompson (ankles) and offensive guard Greg Pyke (knee) did make the trip and presumably will play.
--Not much atmosphere on the field pregame, although Georgia linebackers coach Mike Ekeler and Kevin Sherrer seemed to be doing a good job motivating their guys.
Fifteen minutes before kickoff there are plenty of empty seats on the upper levels.
