Saban is a better coach than Bryant because of Heisman trophy winners? That's a pretty stupid argument. There are ones to be made, and it's great to have both of your coaches in the discussion, but Heisman trophy winners? Gene Chizik has more Heisman trophy winners than Bryant. Q.E.D.
Gene and bear both have 1. John David crow.

I'm sure he meant at Alabama. Of course, I always point out you can't use results to always justify things. Dennis Erickson has two national titles, but he's not Pete Carroll as a coach, not even close.

I agree about Coach Bryant spreading the wealth. An example that comes to mind is the 1972 game vs Virginia Tech played in the rain. We won 52-13. Wilbur Jackson had about 131 yards to lead us in rushing. He only had 3 or 4 carries if I remember. Wilbur led the nation in yards per carry in 1972 and 1973. In 1972 he had only 80 carries and 95 in 1973. Its rather hard to win the Heisman when you average less than 10 carries per game in your Junior and Senior seasons. That, above all else, is while winning all those national titles and SEC titles in the 60s and 70s, no Bama player won the Heisman.

Well as good as Don Hutson was, he likely would have gotten screwed out of the Heisman. No way they were going to let a southern guy from Alabama win the first Heisman Trophy.

... Not sure what year/years it was, but I seem to recall Coach Bryant using his RB's to run the plays in to the huddle
It was 1973, and it was a QB who ran the plays into the huddle. His name is Danny Ridgeway and he couldn't play because he was injured, I believe.

Hutson couldn't have won it because: a) there was no trophy until 1935 and he left in 1934; b) it wasn't called the Heisman Trophy until it was renamed after the coach who had died in 1936. In the early days there were guys like Les Horvath who won it with only 18% of the vote. USC Wifekiller, on the other hand, got 80% and USC PayforPlay got over 90%.

Yes I'm aware there was no trophy until 1935.
