Re: Can Trump Really Win the Presidency?

LOL

tell that to my great grandparents on my moms side who never learned English or the residents of Little Italy's in New York, Boston, Providence, Philly, etc etc etc. The older immigrants often come here clinging to their old ways and then the kids assimilated. Some never assimilate fully which is why we have awesome places likes Chinatown in NYC and the Amazing Italian areas in the Cities above (and others) Hell Atlanta has a great area now known as BuHi to the fancy and Chambodia to the rest of us. I love going there with my Mom as the little kids working in the restaurants are just like how she grew up. 3 generations all working together with the youngest having the best English skills and the grandma's knowing near none. My Italian Great Grandmother refused to learn English. My dry cleaner is Malaysian Chinese and has a thick accent her daughter is a freshman at Auburn who seems like any other Chinese American girl.....Same as it ever was

Trump tells California that "there is no drought"

http://time.com/4351330/trump-california-no-drought/

Can he really be this stupid? I get politicians pandering but when you factor in all the other conspiracy garbage the guy has spewed over the years who knows

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump told California voters Friday that he can solve their water crisis, declaring that: “There is no drought.”

Speaking at a rally in Fresno, Calif., Trump accused state officials of denying water to Central Valley farmers so they can send it out to sea “to protect a certain kind of three-inch fish.”

“We’re going to solve your water problem. You have a water problem that is so insane. It is so ridiculous where they’re taking the water and shoving it out to sea,” Trump said to cheers at a rally that drew thousands.

Trump said he spent 30 minutes before the rally meeting with more than 50 farmers who complained to him about their struggles.

“They don’t understand — nobody understands it,” he said, adding that, “There is no drought.”

Yeah I can't imagine where Trump got that idea. Oh wait - "this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal."

On second thought...

Re: Can Trump Really Win the Presidency?

Some background info behind the "drought" remarks....

Speaking at a rally in Fresno, Calif., Trump accused state officials of denying water to Central Valley farmers so they can send it out to sea "to protect a certain kind of three-inch fish."

Trump appeared to be referring to disputes over water that runs from the Sacramento River to the San Francisco Bay and then to the ocean. Some farmers want more of that flow captured and diverted to them.

Politically influential rural water districts and well-off corporate farmers in and around California's Central Valley have been pushing back against longstanding federal laws protecting endangered fish and other species, saying federal efforts to make sure endangered native fish have enough water is short-changing farmers of the water they want and need for crops.

Water authorities say they can't do it because of the water rights of those upstream of the farmers, and because of the minimum-water allowances needed by endangered species in the bay and by wildlife in general.

The three-inch Delta smelt is a native California fish on the brink of extinction. The smelt has become an emblem in the state's battles over environmental laws and water distribution.

The farm lobby, a heavyweight player in California's water wars, also is seeking federal and state approval for billions of dollars in new water tunnels, dams and other projects.
Trump promised that, if he's elected, he would put their interests first. "If I win, believe me, we're going to start opening up the water so that you can have your farmers survive," he said.

California is the country's No. 1 agriculture producer. The state's drought is raising the stakes in water disputes among farmers, cities and towns, and environmental interests.

That tale always gets twisted around. Actually Cnut took his nobles down to the sea to illustrate to them that he had no command over the tides...

In reality, he's pandering. As usual. The snowpack ain't there and the water ain't there. The fish are the tiniest part of it. It's idiotic to go into CA and proclaim "no drought" and you're smart enough to realize it...

To tell you the truth.....I read what everyone was quoting him as saying...."There's no drought"

Like everyone else....I was curious why he would say something so outrageous like that.

So I dug into it and shared with the forum what I learned.

Whether or not there's anything legitimate to what the article stated - I admit - I'm no expert and would have to spend more time researching.

But to tell you the truth - I don't really have time and it's not a big deal to me. I just thought the forum might be interested in what was behind the remarks...except of course for the pandering. :)

Re: Can Trump Really Win the Presidency?

FWIW.....more info about the dispute between the biologists and the farmers.....article from April 2015.....

"A lot of water has been thrown at the problem, to no apparent effect," he said. "Twenty million Californians depend on a water supply kept away from them by one small, little population of fish."

Good riddance, wrote Fresno-based Harry Cline of the Farm Press Blog. Turning off the pumps that serve the state and federal water projects wasted about 800,000 acre-feet of water in 2013 "based on the science of four buckets of minnows. That is enough water to produce crops on 200,000 acres or 10 million tons of tomatoes; 200 million boxes of lettuce; 20 million tons of grapes."
California needs to redouble its efforts to save those smelt that remain, counters conservation biologist Jon Rosenfield of the Bay Institute. Fish need far more freshwater inflows to oxygenate their water than they've been getting, as they also struggle against rising temperatures, salinity, pollution and predators, he said.

Well when my ancestors on my dad's side came from Sicily through New Orleans, they ended up learning English and largely abandoned their old ways.

This may be a bit off track, but my ancestors came over from Europe so many generations ago that I have no idea what they were like. I can only pay attention to what I'm like.

Re: Can Trump Really Win the Presidency?

And now we are finding Trump and Clinton are basically two sides of the same deceptive coin.

http://www.politicususa.com/2016/05...rump-reveals-presidential-campaign-broke.html

Trump, who was financing his own campaign, apparently is NOT financing his own campaign.........and so is broke until he gets the actual nomination monies.

How can a billionaire who is financing his own campaign be broke and NOT financing his own campaign?

And doesn't this put the lie to the whole 'tell it like it is' nonsense?

The GOP may as well hunker down and deny this guy the nomination and HOPE they can salvage something beyond a total disaster in the Congressional races. Rick Santorum could not be as bad for the party as this guy; my God, SARAH PALIN could not be as bad for the party as this guy. He has already successfully divided it to the point that the only question is whether Hillary is going to get a mandate with both houses in her corner.

Btw - those of you who are believing this 'Bernie's folks won't vote for Hillary' nonsense.....we hear this EVERY election about a nominee. EVERY ONE. I really ought to go look up some quotes from past elections and put them here so we can end this notion that this is 'really' all that different.

Every election people complain about the nominees and say someone else should have run.
Every election, the Democrats insist that whoever the GOP VP nominee is, he (or she) is unqualified and proof that the standard bearer is unqualified (they have a point with Quayle and Palin but....really)
Every election, the Republicans label the nominee as 'the most liberal (name of office) in the (name of office).'
Every election, we're told the GOP nominee is an 'extremist' on the abortion issue.....and every election, abortion is no better than tenth on 'issues we vote on.'
Every election I'm told the Democratic nominee is going to take us to socialism (Carter didn't, Clinton didn't.....well, you may have a point with Empty Suit)

And every election - AFTER it's over - the populace tells us how 'it was obvious four years ago' that the winner was going to win. (Really? How many of you picked Trump last September to be the delegate winner? That's right, nobody.....and if you did, give me a link to prove it).

And these 'tell it like it is' candidates - these Howard Cosells of politics - ALWAYS get exposed NOT telling it like it is.
