Auburn finished third in the BCS. Bill's point is simple - they would have been fine with today's format.
I guess SOS doesn't matter much then but I am not convinced a one loss Alabama (win Mercer) gets in over a one loss Notre Dame with all FBS schedule. I just saw a Southern Union bus at McDonalds. I wonder if they have a football team?

Alabama might would get in if Notre Dame's loss is to Georgia, but we beat Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

You need not be so pessimistic.

Still, the overall point that a weak non-conference schedule can hurt you is a good one. See Baylor. But we don't have a weak schedule, even with a cupcake.
Very true. Alabama can afford a cupcake because of its conference. Baylor, OTOH, cannot.

I'm glad we're playing Mercer. How else would we be closing in on 100 posts in an off season thread about an opponent two seasons from now!

Not to mention that Alabama WILL schedule one live body in the OOC schedule unlike Baylor to date.

I don't know, I just remember the folks on SoonerFans talking about Bob Stoops getting out of a 1A game and getting Bowling Green in their place and how that really helped them at the end. I know we talk all the time about Baylor and their easy schedule. I just wish Alabama would act like they are the leader and not the follower.
Comparing us to Baylor because we play two or three easy games is not comparing apples to apples. They normally only play two or three challenging games; whereas, we normally have half the teams we play in the top 30. Again, these players need some rest, and younger players need some game time to develop. Please, though, let's be realistic with our comparisons.

Ironically, Bowling Green was available because the barn had dropped them and picked up The Citadel.

Yep. Safe to say that a 14-0 SEC Champion is going to make the CFP. Even if they play FOUR 1AA schools OOC as did Coach Bryant's 1950 UK team.

Still SMH at what he did that year. Only team (ut) 1A or 1AA they had played with a winning record (or a pulse for that matter) they lost the game. Then, with that great resume, in order to get the Sugar Bowl bid, guarantees a win over Oklahoma! LOL! Mercer HC may as well guarantee a win over Bama.

OKLAHOMA, 1950 UNDEFEATED AP NATIONAL CHAMPION, winners of THIRTY ONE straight games. Had not lost since the opener in 1948, and would lose but five more games in the next SEVEN YEARS, winning FORTY SEVEN straight from 1953-1957. Had played no non-1A teams and but three with a losing record. You're going to take that resume and guarantee a win over OKLAHOMA, and then do it!? UNBELIVABLE! Could make a movie about that!
