What he seems to be arguing for is a free market which is very far from socialism. Maintaining a competitive field is more socialist than letting the chips fall where they may in a system where schools are free to offer unlimited scholarships.

I feel the same way. The NCAA is a needed regulatory body but the way top-level college football has grown since the 1980s requires a rethinking of the existing structures.
Agree with what you are saying and B1G to a point. I think the Power 5 conferences need to have their own classification in football. Not sure all of the teams in the Power 5 need to be included. I'd give the kids 5 years to play 5, 125 total scholarships. No set # per year, just can't have more than 125 per at any given time.

A marketplace is for buying and selling, that is the NFL. College football is not a marketplace

At either rate, I have contributed to this line of discussion so I own some of the blame, but we need to get this topic back on the tracks. Its the offseason so there is some leniency in the discussion, but we're heading down a political area that is dicy and can be seen different way from whatever facet you view it.

I'm going to close this topic if we can't be civil.

Guys, some of you are moving this discussion very rapidly towards the NonSports board. I don't mind a discussion about what you guys think is good or bad, but keep politics and personal attacks out of it or we'll close it and hand out some suspensions.

Who brought in politics? You mean political or socioeconomic analogies?

Would just make our game an nfl jr, and thus kill it

Let's drop the discussion about how this fits into the big picture, which differs for each individual, obviously, and bring it back to the original thread topic and let's do it now...

Re: Yahoo Sources: NCAA to formally charge Mississippi with rules violations

It's called parity..The smaller schools wouldn't be able to match-up with the big schools that has bigger budgets like Bama & Ohio St..I don't like the NCAA, but, college football needs the NCAA to keep the playing field at a more competitive level for all the teams involved..
College football needs rules, but they need an arbiter that will follow standard legal procedures. No "secret" witnesses. No man behind the curtain pulling strings and deciding who will get slammed this year, and who will not.

Even if you believe in the rules themselves, their enforcement is as important as those rules. Are you telling me that the NCAA has ever really tried to enforce them fairly?

As for this situation in MS - I won't believe that anything will happen to them until it actually does.

I don't think Ole Siss gets anything of substance done to them. They may deserve it, but like A&M and Auburn they will get nothing, even though everyone knows Johnny Foosball and Scam Newton were dirty as a pig in slop. Maybe Freeze is just that good of a recruiter, but I doubt it.

Another perspective . . . think the assumptions are questionable but the Ole Miss board is happy!

The writer compared Ole Miss to Baylor and Clemson but there is a difference. Baylor (Briles) started winning before the recruiting improved. Winning always helps recruiting. I'm not sure about Clemson but I do know they have overachieved their recruit ranking, nationally, anyway.

Baylor average recruiting over past four years is twenty-nine. I don't think that can compare with Ole Miss by any stretch.

If you want 125 scholarships, I hope you also like the Alabama women's lacrosse team.

The NFL has a salary cap and roster limits. No different than the NCAA.

Seriously, how many times do you guys need to read "stay on topic and keep it away from non-sports?"

Well I just visited ITAT and this is an REC and Emmert co-conspiracy to keep the chosen one winning. What do you expect when you beat the chosen team two in a row? Investigation, that's what. Grown adults actually believe this. :)

Your points about the unfair way the rules are enforced and punishment is handed out is the problem I have with the NCAA, and I think most here agree. There has to be a rules structure and governing body or college ball will become black market pro ball. Too many insignificant rules and bias will ruin the game too. Schools lawyering up to avoid scrutiny that is warranted should be punished and hard. The right balance will be hard to attain but improvements can be made. That's what we want.

That's to be expected from the tin foil hat, conspiracy bunch. The Barn is going to begin running out onto the field with the X Files theme song playing.

Ole Miss doesn't seem too concerned, but wonder if it affects Little or Simmons or other top recruits on signing day. Glad to see they admit violations regarding Tunsil; his recruiting certainly was the most puzzling I can recall.

Re: Yahoo Sources: NCAA to formally charge Mississippi with rules violations

It doesn't really matter how many there are - it just takes one big one called "lack of institutional controls".

Agreed and most of us knew all of the allegations were not against the football program. The writer is a Cowherd protege and Barn grad so hence the closing paragraph.
