I was going to suggest Hathcock, but I saw in the wiki article he was the inspiration for the character.
But, shouldn't their leaders be excited to be the snipers next kill?

Carlos Hathcock was the man! His book is indeed a great read! There are also a couple interview videos floating around with him discussing some of the unlucky "hamburgers" that met the crosshairs of his scope!!

I did not know who this was until today. By doing a little research I found the following brief history of his service. All I can say is wow! Thank you for bringing his name to the discussion. I will look for his book.
