Three-run first inning provides the Crimson Tide with all the run support needed

March 4, 2016

CARY, N.C. -
Alabama starter Geoffrey Bramblett's eight-inning start helped lead the Crimson Tide to a 4-0 shutout win over Notre Dame on Friday evening at the USA Baseball-Irish Classic. Alabama has now won seven straight and improves to 8-1 on the season, 1-0 in the tournament.

"Geoffrey (Bramblett) was really sharp all night long," said Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard. "From the first pitch on, he was locked in. He took us deep in the game to help get the win, and then (Matt) Foster finished with a good inning in the ninth. Overall, I thought we played clean with good defense, and we had a lot of energy tonight. This was a really good way to get the tournament started."

Bramblett (1-0) worked 8.0 innings of five-hit baseball, striking out six across 108 pitches, 73 for strikes. The junior right-hander did not issue a walk in the outing, the fifth time he's done so for his career as a starter, and did not allow an extra-base hit all evening. Matt Foster followed with one inning of work to help complete the shutout of the Fighting Irish, the Crimson Tide's first shutout since the team blanked Vanderbilt in the final game of the 2015 regular season.

Alabama jumped out to an early lead, building an early 3-0 lead after the first inning of play. The Tide began its run-scoring rally with a Keith Holcombe walk on four-pitches to lead off the game. Fellow freshman Cobie Vance followed with a single through the left side to put two on with no outs, before Chandler Taylor drew a four-pitch walk to load the bags. Cody Henry dug in next and promptly sent a double down the right field line to clear the bases and give Alabama three runs. With the two-base knock, Henry has now reached safely in all nine contests this season.

The Crimson Tide added one more tally in the fourth, thanks to an RBI single from Chance Vincent. The frame began with a Chandler Avant single and a walk by Will Haynie to put two on. The senior first baseman then sent a single through the left side to bring home Avant and widen the gap to 4-0.

"The offense did a good job early in the game, and jumped on their starter in the first," Gaspard added. "Cody Henry got the big hit to score three in the first, and that really set the tone for the rest of the game."

The Tide offense stayed patient all night, walking eight times in the game, the most since the second game of the doubleheader with Mississippi Valley State on April 21 of last season. Alabama matched Notre Dame on hits with six and is now 4-0 on the young season when tying the opposition in the hit column.

Alabama will resume play on Saturday with a pair of games. The first contest is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT against Niagara, and is followed by a 3:30 p.m. CT matchup with N.C. State. The weekend tournament wraps up with Brown at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday morning.
