Pitcher’s duel ended in favor of the Cougars following a two-run ninth inning

March 11, 2016

TUSCALOOSA, AL –
In a matchup that featured strong pitching, Alabama baseball fell, 3-1, to No. 21 Houston on a wet Friday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Cougars collected a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to steal the victory in the series opener.

“A lot of credit goes to (Andrew) Lantrip,” said Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard. “I thought he pitched well. He pitched us the same way, as he climbed the ladder and we chased the ball up. Offensively tonight, our performance was just not enough.”

Houston starter Andrew Lantrip (2-2) worked 8.0 innings of one-run baseball, allowing six hits while not issuing a walk. The junior right-hander also recorded 13 punchouts on the evening to collect his second win of the year.

The Alabama arms stayed near even until late, with Crimson Tide starter Geoffrey Bramblett allowing only a solo home run in the fifth. Bramblett finished with four hits and four walks allowed but struck out four in his 4.1 innings of work. Following the Tide starter was Kyle Cameron, with the freshman working 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball.

The game was decided in the ninth, when a one-out walk and a single put Cougars on the corners for Joe Davis. The UH first baseman sent a 1-2 pitch from Matt Foster (1-1) off the wall in left to bring two runners across and give Houston the 3-1 advantage.

Houston struck first, using a solo home run from Davis to lead off the fifth inning. Alabama answered with a solo bomb of its own in the seventh. Chandler Taylor came out of the break and sent a 3-2 homer over the wall in right-center to even the score at 1-1.

The Cougars put two on the board in the ninth before Alabama came to bat. The Crimson Tide led off the final frame with a walk, but a double play and a strikeout ended the game in favor of the visitor.

The two teams return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. CT for game two of the weekend series. Alabama will call on sophomore right-hander Jake Walters to even the series, while Houston’s starter is still to be determined. The game can be seen live on SECN+ with Roger Hoover and Lance Cormier on the call once again.
