Here's a radical idea or a bold blab that's not a prediction but a fantasy projection: The NCAA owns the NIT. They should have 32 invitees and make the entire tournament a play-in event to the Big Dance. The last four standing of the 32 NIT "bubble teams" get in along with 60 Selection Sunday draws. Now you've got a field of 64 and something to play for, for everybody in the postseason - and big crowds at every venue. So the NIT survivors would have to play four, maybe five games in seven days - not like that ain't ever happened.

That would delay the tournament 2 weeks

Not necessarily but there would be a delay. It could go off without a delay if the NIT "play-in" tournament comprised 16 teams and the last four standing were NCAA-tournament bound - which means playing two "pre-tournament" (Big Dance) games to get into the Thursday or Friday night games. Or you could make it so the four NIT survivors would only play in the Friday night games in the bracket so they could have a little rest between surviving and getting a chance for an even longer season survival.

Shame to have such loathing for the NIT, but really it's either spring training for college basketball, or else playing to prove that you are the 67th best D1 team in the country...
