Re: Satelite camps are done

Satellite camps were opposed by the SEC and the ACC, but blind jealousy has the commenters only attacking the SEC (and Saban). Bless their hearts.
ESPN's stupid coverage of this didn't help. They like putting people on TV that obviously don't even understand what's going on (the videos of one of their commentators saying how Alabama didn't belong ranked in the top 4 last year comes to mind). But, they have this clip in which a guy was saying only the SEC, ACC and one other conference supported this rule change. Then how the heck would it get passed? Oh wait he was just making that up.

The article states: "The SEC, ACC, Pac-12 and Big 12 conferences all voted to end satellite camps, a source said. Among the Group of 5 conferences, the Sun Belt and Mountain West voted against the satellite camps"

Re: Satelite camps are done

It seems like a problem, but it could be overcome by sharing film and player evaluations with coaches with whom you have solid relationships. The smaller schools who "appear" to be the victims don't have the travel budgets anyway, so just share data. This solves the problem for both the players and the smaller schools, and it forces jerks like Harbaugh to actually try to be liked by other coaches if he wants anything of value from other school camps.

Th bigger schools usually want a player to camp at their school for consideration anyway, so they are not harmed by this. The highly rated players will have to be more selective in their camp attendance, but they always have been anyway. And the lower rated players would actually get more attention if a guy like Saban or Meyer rated him highly and shared that rating with other schools.

Re: Satelite camps are done

I can see the point of the unintended consequences, and the kneejerk reaction does not appear to be well thought out. One does not want to limit the ability for a kid to get seen and earn a scholarship, especially the ones that have no real shot at an NFL career. The ones that do seem to get found many times without doing a school camp.

Thing is every rule put in place to limit what coaches can do in recruiting has the same effect. When coaches can't camp, watch or contact them, it limits who gets evaluated.

Mike Leach rails on 'selfish,' 'lazy' SEC 'babies,' takes on satellite camps ban

"Look at it this way," Leach said. "In our case, Los Angeles, in south central LA, there are going to be kids, UCLA is going to fill up not need somebody at this position, USC is going to fill up and not need somebody at this position – and then all of a sudden some kid is sitting there, I mean a quality kid who can play Pac-12 football. You don't think it's pretty important to that kid to have exposure to Washington State, Washington, Utah, Oregon State, Oregon, Arizona and Arizona State. You don't think that means something to him?

"And you don't think that supersedes some petty jealousies that exist because somebody thinks Jim Harbaugh has bad manners? That's the craziest thing ever. And if Jim Harbaugh is in their head, they better analyze themselves. That says more about them than it does Jim Harbaugh."

I wish coaches and the media would stop using the word "kid" to describe high school seniors and student athletes in college..

MICHIGAN COACH JIM HARBAUGH RIPS RECENT SATELLITE CAMP VOTE: 'I SUGGEST WE DROP THE TERM STUDENT-ATHLETE'

The NCAA just took a shot at Jim Harbaugh.

But who really got hit?

The NCAA banned satellite camps last week, which means Harbaugh cannot take his Michigan staff around the country this June the way he did last summer. But by doing so, the organization passed a dumb, restrictive rule that will limit opportunities for the players and schools that need them most. Effective immediately, college coaches cannot work any camp that is not on their own campus.

As Harbaugh tells SI : "The incompetence of the NCAA has reared its ugly head yet again."

From there, Harbaugh really got going, firing at the NCAA's use of the term "student-athlete," a certain SEC head coach and the two conferences (the SEC and the ACC) that seem to benefit from this ban. However, Harbaugh wants to be clear: The NCAA is not some nebulous group of bureaucrats. It is comprised of the people who work in intercollegiate athletics. Coaches, athletic directors and school presidents make these decisions. And they completely botched this one.

Harbaugh says the ruling was "knee-jerk ... like somebody was shaving in the morning, cut themselves when they were shaving and said, 'Let's just ban satellite camps.'

"I mean, what's it based on? A survey? There wasn't a lot of discussion or study. What are the facts? What are the perils and merits of making that decision? It just seemed lacking in that regard."

Re: Satelite camps are done

I must not get all of this, but it seems to me every program should have a series of camps on their campus every year. This should make sense to most everyone since the potential recruit will be on campus, see the facilities, visit with the coaches, see the stadium and get a flavor of the campus.

Are we not missing the forest for the trees in this argument? Why is the Big 10 so interested in holding satellite camps?? One reason and one reason only; the South is where the prospects are!! They have zero interest in helping a Mac team or any other smaller program!! If they were truly interested in helping young players they would put all this effort into building up high school football in their own areas instead of trying to cherry pick.

Re: Satelite camps are done

The false indignation is ridiculous. The idea of keeping coaches from making a three-ring recruiting circus out of spring training is sound. Without even pulling the "will somebody PLEASE think of the student-athletes" card, it is wrong because it is a clear circumvention of the recruiting contact rules. Like when your sibling hovers their finger right in front of your face when you tell them to stop touching you, this just coming as close to prospect contact as possible without doing it during a dead period.

The bad rule language which keeps mid-major coaches from attending HS summer camps at other schools is a problem. It will be fixed - maybe even before the Summer - but the Harbaugh scheme is dead.

Re: Satelite camps are done

I think the whole idea behind the satellite camps is way off base. The guys who are in these camps are NOT going to the NFL. Perhaps one in a million guys who attend (blue chippers don't go to these camps normally, they get flown in the private jet) Thus these guys are looking for a college home to get an education. Oh sure half of them think they are the next JJ Watts but they have a better chance of getting a concussion from getting hit in the head with a meteorite. How exactly can you determine anything about "U of Michigan" when you are at some high school in central Alabama or Florida.

In my opinion Harbaugh was looking for suckers for his scout team. If you're going to be a scout team guy go to Bama and at least get a NT ring for your trouble and an offer to coach from any High School in Alabama.

Yeah, that's not accurate at all.
