Georgia football coach Kirby Smart’s six-year deal with the school includes a $50,000 bonus based on the academic performance of his team.
That could take some time to achieve because the football team’s latest multi-year NCAA Academic Progress Rate is 961 under his predecessor Mark Richt. That’s the same score registered last year when Georgia ranked ninth among 14 SEC football programs.
Smart is eligible for the academic bonus for the team finishing in the top third in the SEC in both the Academic Progress Rate and the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate. That’s among bonuses on top his $3.75 million annual salary.
The latest multi-year APR scores are from the four-year period from the 2011-12 through 2014-15 school years.
The NCAA has yet to release each school’s complete scores by team, but Georgia’s were obtained through an open records request.
The APR provides a real-time look at teams' academic performances by calculating eligibility, retention and graduation of its players.
All of Georgia’s teams were safe from coming close to the 930 score, which can bring a postseason ban or scholarship loss.
Men’s basketball registered a 985, down from 990 a year ago.
The men’s and women’s cross country teams and women’s swimming and diving team were publicly recognized last week by the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent nationally in their sports. All scored a perfect 1,000.
Football scored the lowest of Georgia’s 18 teams (outdoor and indoor track are listed as one). Georgia’s football APR for the 2014-15 academic year was a 948 for 96 student-athletes represented. The eligibility/graduation score was 956 but retention was 927.
Defensive backs Brendan Langley, Sheldon Dawson and Shaq Jones all parted ways with the team during the 2014 season and receiver Blake Tibbs in the spring of 2015.
Five teams saw an increase in APR score led by women’s basketball which rose 10 points to 991. Seven teams declined with gymnastics the biggest by nine points but still had a 991 after getting a 1,000 a year ago. Six teams scored the same including both men’s tennis at 994 and women’s tennis at 984.
