Georgia missed out on the commitment of a five-star wide receiver on Sunday.
Demetris Robertson, the last highly ranked prospect of the class of 2016 to choose a college destination, waited nearly three months after the signing period began in early February to make his decision.
He picked Cal over Georgia and Notre Dame at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
Georgia needed playmakers at the receiver position, so Kirby Smart and Company didn’t give up on the 5-foot-11 standout from Savannah Christian Prep (Savannah, Ga).
A U.S. Army All American, Robertson was also heavily recruited by Alabama and Georgia Tech and at one time had Stanford at or near the top of his list of favorites.
The Bulldogs 2016 class ranked No. 7 in the country, according to 247Sports, before his commitment.
Georgia signed 20 players, including three five-stars, from December to February.
Robertson will not sign a letter of intent. Instead, he’ll remain verbally committed until he enrolls, presumably, at Cal in June.
The Bulldogs currently have the No. 8 ranked 2017 recruiting class. Of the eight verbal pledges, six are considered four star prospects, led by Houston County quarterback Jake Fromm and Liberty County defensive back Richard LeCounte, and all are from the state of Georgia.
