Court papers allege Joe Pa knew of child sex abuse as far back as 1976

Don't forget about this:
Last September the NCAA lifted the final two years of the postseason ban, allowing Penn State the opportunity to play in the Pinstripe Bowl last December. In January the NCAA lifted the remainder of the sanction terms and restored all vacated victories, although an agreement was made for Penn State to continue paying off the $60 million to go toward child abuse awareness.
http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsport...state-paterno-lawsuit-jerry-sandusky-scandal/

The NCAA restored the vacated victories for Penn State, and they refused to restore victories vacated by Bama over the textbook issue. Well now...

http://isportsweb.com/2010/03/24/alabama’s-textbook-appeal-denied-by-the-ncaa/

Alabama was not appealing the three year probation it received, but the football wins that were vacated.
Maybe if Sandusky had also given his rape victims a free textbook the NCAA would have made the vacated victories stand for Penn State, and not reverse course.

I've felt this way since this scandal first broke - I hope State Penn loses every game they ever play again.

I can't imagine a player wanting to be part of revolting hell-hole.

State Penn sucks.

Yep. And Joe Pa took the easy way out. I wish he'd live through the whole trial and have to answer to what he did or didn't do.

I never believed joepa was NEARLY as good as his sanctimonious arse pretended to be, but I NEVER thought he was as as purely rotten as he turned out to be. Let's face it, if he had a shred of human decency, wouldn't he have taken stock of what he had allowed to transpire in 40+ years under his watch and have done something about it?

Evidently he had absolutely NO conscience at all, NONE, NADA, ZIP. And apparently neither does his son Jay who is lying his guts out trying to defend his disgusting behavior.

As far as I'm concerned, joepa is am immoral, slimy, low-life scumbag.

May he rot in hell.

Men are fallible. That includes college football coaching legends.
That's possibly the worst cop-out I've ever seen.

Paterno was disgusting human who deserves whatever posthumous derision he gets.

That said, 'legend' is debatable at this point - at least outside of child porn circles.

I've got to put people who abuse children in a category by themselves. Joe Paterno is just as guilty as Sandusky by not doing anything. Jay Paterno needs to just sit down and shut up and quit defending this guy.

Yep, I hope they lose every game they play too. I detest them now more than Auburn.

Agreed. Willful negligence is not a good excuse for the atrocities he covered up by looking the other way.

On the legend thing- one national doesn't make you a legend (obviously). Most of his wins came prior to joining the B1G. Easy to win a lot of games as an independent (1966-1992). Not saying he wasn't a good coach. But not a legend. There are only a few of those, two of which have coached or is still coaching at Bama.

I suspected this at the time - well, at least that like everything else there was WAY MORE to it than we were being told. The entire thing is slimy and makes me feel dirty. It also really makes sound more and more bizarre the comment Paterno made over 30 years ago about 'retiring and leaving college football to the Jackie Sherrills of the world." Absolutely repugnant.

It's also clear Penn State created/tolerated/permitted the kind of environment where that kind of situation could occur (just as Florida State has done with their shenangians and - much as I hate to say it - we did over a decade ago....I'm obviously referring to the athletics department as wagging the dog of the university, not suggesting the DuBose era nonsense is even in the same galaxy as pedophilia).

(And yet for the life of me, I cannot understand the obsession some folks have with 'vacating wins').

In the great scheme of things, vacating wins really doesn't amount to much. But in this case, it appears that at some point Paterno abandoned whatever principles he may have had in pursuit of the wins record--so vacating those wins has a certain poetic justice.

Not that I disagree with your point about principles (because I actually agree with it), but we don't get to undo something just because we don't like the result, either. Barry Bonds used steroids and the whole world KNOWS he used steroids - but he still has the record and probably will until long after I'm dead. (A certain contingent here - no reflection on present company - seems to have this obsession with the removal of wins to ensure Coach Bryant moves back to second among FBS coaches; several fans commented as much on this board when the initial revocation occurred in 2012; I'm thinking this is guided by double emotion - the response to the disgusting allegations plus love for Coach Bryant).

It's not as though anyone had a competitive advantage here. But back to the substance of allegations.

I don't know if you've seen the allegations against England's late popular figure Jimmy Savile, but they make Paterno look like a choir boy (no pun intended or slam towards Catholics, either) by comparison. (Obviously the comparison is asymmetrical since nobody is alleging Paterno actually DID the abusing). The comparison, though, is in the fact that both these guys were HIGHLY popular, supposedly great examples of what people should aspire to. In Savile's case, the media helped keep the lid on it until he died - and it was almost the same with Paterno. If only the allegations had come out three months later, Paterno would have been in the ground and not answered ANYTHING.

And speaking of emotion - while I completely understand the desire to defend one's father, somebody needs to smack Jay Paterno with a tube sock full of screws.

As big of a college football fan I am, there's nothing about the sport or any college football program, that I would put above & beyond the safety of kids(including Bama)..I just can't understand or fathom multiple folks walking in on Sandusky molesting kids & not one of them, beat the ever loving you know what out of Sandusky when it was happening..

Human nature in our DNA is to protect kids & we would step in stopping the rape of kids if any of us saw it happening..I would have no problem killing a man doing that to kids..I dunno..The fact that so many at PSU didn't stop the rape of a kid when they walked in on Sandusky baffles & honestly ticks me off thinking they just let it go on..

It appears whatever 'principles' (and I use that term extremely loosely) the dead idiot ever had were gone some 40+ years ago. At this point it's debatable as to whether or not paterno was ever a decent man at all.

Flippin' dirtbag.

The Sandusky thing was always somewhat remarkable. Jerry Sandusky worked for Joe Paterno for three decades. Considering the level of play at Penn State, the ability to keep a someone around that long isn't really normal. When you add to this what Sandusky was actually doing, this relationship looks like an evil alliance. Clearly at some point this relationship crossed the line to the point that Joe Paterno was enabling and protecting Sandusky, if he was doing it merely for the sake of football success or some other warped reason, that is the part we might never really know.

There's no burying one's head in the sand at this point. Joe Paterno dying doesn't wipe anything clean. One victim even said: "Joe Paterno spoke to him on the phone and urged him to drop his accusations". I hope Joe Paterno does not have any peace, let's just put it that way.

I don't think it's been specifically mentioned here, but CNN has a source that alleged Joe Paterno threatened to turn something who reported abuse in to the authorities...
