Wow. It had to be done. Things just have not been the same since the Jim Wells years. Now that Bama had the state of the art baseball facility, with the right guy, things will get a lot better.

I'd like to see us talk to David Magadan, a former great player for Bama, and hitting coach for the Texas Rangers the last two years.
However he interviewed for the same position with the Yankees this past week, so he might be hard to get.
BUT, if he could make the same money without having to coach 162 games he may just be interested.

It was time and good he took the initiative to resign. From most accounts he is a good guy, just not a successful coach, and I hope for good things for him and his family. Now we have a great chance to really improve the baseball program. I hope CBB seeks and gets some very good advice on where to direct his search.

I would not even consider a guy with no head coaching experience at the college level. And I would aim high.

Same here and from what others have been saying, the players all liked him and he's a great guy from all accounts. However, a change definitely needed to be made.

Positive not confusing him with Sonny. Some players may have liked him. Others, not so much. In the end I think the change is best for all. It couldn't have been easy for Mitch knowing his contract wasn't renewed. He was a lame duck which really wasn't fair to him.

I feel they have talent, it just wasn't utilized. Unlike some, I think the roster has talent, just needs to be developed.

I don't think any of us know how much talent we have, because I also don't think any of it has been developed.

He is with the Diamondbacks, this season. Not sure why he would want to leave. The stRangers forced him out, saying he wanted to work closer to home.

Which is why he now coaches further from home. That is the only draw we have.

He did? I missed that.

No, instead he would have to recruit. Not everyone is cut out for that job. In any case, October is several months away.

Good for him for falling on his sword.

What other choice did he have since his contract was not renewed last year? CBB is just letting CMG take the high road. It's better for both parties that he did resign. Nothing short of a CWS appearance was going to reignite contract discussions.

The link I had about the Yankees interview was out dated. I knew he wasn't with Texas anymore but had no idea about the Diamondbacks job. At any rate, I think he'd be a pretty good candidate. We're going to have great difficulty hiring someone from a very successful division one school because I simply can't seeing us paying them enough. It's not like we have this great tradition in baseball. Matter of fact, and ironically, the very best team we may have ever had was the Magadan led team that lost to Texas in the finals at Omaha.

Yes and no. Recruiting in baseball is different than football, and states with more money get more scholarships. Also, while we do have good in state talent, we don't have anywhere near the amount of talent like Florida, Texas, and Louisiana. The only real puzzling things are why the Mississippis and vandy better than us, and why has USA surpassed us and auburn in our own state. The answer to both could very well be superior coaching and recruiting.
Ole Miss and Mississippi State have been committed to baseball for a long time. They have had top notch facilities for over 10 years combined with a far better coaching staff. The Alabama administration simply waited too long to make baseball a priority. Way too long. Needed a new stadium over 10 year ago.

Vandy has the best of all worlds in recruiting for baseball- they are in a lottery state and they are a private school that can offer academic type scholarships to minorities. Take a look at their team and roster. Huge advantage- they did not become a great baseball program just because of the coach they hired.

Used to bowl with a guy who had a son on UT's team. I remember he was HBP. I razzed his dad that he turned into it, and "took one for the team".

True. But, Vandy is a private school, therefore, the lottery scholarship money is not available to Vanderbilt students. UcheaT would be the school that would benefit from the lottery funds, but they have stunk it up for several years.

Hope Scholarships are available to students attending private schools. Has more to do with the student than the school attended. Vanderbilt is an Eligible Institution in Tennessee.

The State of Alabama would have a lottery in about five seconds if lottery money could be used to provide additional football players.

Thanks. That's what happens when one assumes and doesn't use Google.

The TN Hope Scholarship awards up to $1750 per enrollment semester for Freshmen and Sophomores. It then goes up to $2250 for juniors and seniors per semester. Those amounts became effective Fall 2015. Vanderbilt's tuition for 2015/2016 is $43620 for the year. That's just tuition.
