63 Days: Jim Bunch

Bunch entered the Alabama starting lineup in the third game of the 1976 season against Vanderbilt.[SUP][3][/SUP] He was the only freshman to start during the season and was recognized as First Team Freshman All-SEC for his efforts.[SUP][2][/SUP] Bunch remained as a fixture in the Crimson Tide offensive line over the next three seasons alongside Buddy Aydelette, Vince Boothe, Mike Brock and Dwight Stephenson and helped lead Alabama to an overall record of 43 wins and 5 losses (43–5) during his career at the Capstone.[SUP][2][/SUP][SUP][3][/SUP]
In recognition for his play during his sophomore and junior years, Bunch was a First Team All-SEC selection.[SUP][4][/SUP] After his senior year, Bunch was named First Team All-SEC and as a consensus selection to the 1979 College Football All-America Team and was awarded the Douglas McArthur Trophy in early 1980 in recognition for his achievements as a Virginia athlete outside the commonwealth.[SUP][3][/SUP][SUP][4][/SUP][SUP][5][/SUP] In recognition of his accomplishments as a student athlete, the Virginia state legislature passed a resolution that declared February 2, 1980, as "Jim Bunch Day."[SUP][3][/SUP]
Although he was a consensus selection to the All-America Team, Bunch went undrafted and was not signed as an undrafted free agent after the 1980 NFL Draft.[SUP][6][/SUP] He was left unsigned due to NFL teams believing he was too short to be competitive as an offensive lineman as a professional.[SUP][6][/SUP] As such, Bunch then played a single season as a semi-professional with the West Virginia Rockets.[SUP][/SUP]

Jim Bunch's girlfriend/wife did her student teaching at my elementary school and he was nice enough to sign a lot of his pictures for our whole grade. I remember being super excited getting that picture of him and I think I remember him coming to speak with us too.

The 1993 Alabama Crimson Tide football team represented the University of Alabama for the 1993–94 college football season, competing in the Southeastern Conference Western Division. The team was led by head coaches Gene Stallings, who was in his fourth season at the position.
The team attempted to repeat as Bowl Coalition National Champions, following their victory in the 1993 Sugar Bowl to claim their twelfth national championship. The team began the season ranked #2 in the AP Poll, behind Florida State.[SUP][1][/SUP]
Alabama began the season by winning their first five games, extending their winning streak to 28 games, matching the longest win streak in school history. The streak ended with a 17–17 tie against Tennessee (the unbeaten streak continued to 31 games before Alabama fell to LSU 13–17).
Alabama finished second in the SEC West in 1993, but played in the SEC Championship Game as Auburn was prohibited from post-season play because of NCAA violations. In the 1993 SEC Championship Game, Alabama lost 28–13 to the Florida Gators at Legion Field. Alabama received an invitation to the 1993 Gator Bowl versus North Carolina, winning 24–10 and finishing with a 9–3–1 record.
In 1995, the NCAA found Antonio Langham guilty of receiving improper benefits after signing with an agent following the 1992 season, forcing Alabama to forfeit all games in which Langham competed.[SUP][2][/SUP] Officially, Alabama finished the season with a 1–12 record, only winning their bowl game.[SUP][[/SUP]

59 Days: Antoine Caldwell & Sylvester Croom

By Kerry Goode

59 days out....
2 All Americans are honored for the number...
#59 Antoine Caldwell - from Lee High School of Montgomery.
One of the few Crimson Tide players to twice be honored with handprints and footprints laid into the concrete surrounding Denny Chimes (2007, 2008). After a broken foot sustained early in his first fall camp forced Caldwell into a redshirt season, he came back the next year to win a starting spot at guard and was named Freshman First Team All-SEC. He was moved to center in that year's Cotton Bowl and continued on at the spot. He was named a consensus All-American 2008.
A third round pick of the Houston Texans where he played from 2009 to 2012, including 19 starts, he is currently a free agent.
#59 Sylvester Croom, Jr. He is currently the running backs coach for the NFL's Tennessee Titans. He was the head coach at Mississippi State University from 2004 to 2008, and the first African American head football coach in the Southeastern Conference. His father, Sylvester Croom, Sr., was himself an All-American football player at Alabama A&M, later the team chaplain.
Sly Anchored three SEC championships from 1972 to 1974 and a National title in 1973. All-American and team captain in 1974, he also won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy. Alabama has a spring award named after him: the Sylvester Croom Commitment to Excellence Award.
Croom spent one year with the New Orleans Saints before turning to coaching. After 11 years as a Bama assistant, and several NFL stops, he got the head coaching job at Mississippi State (2004–2008). He is currently running backs coach for the Tennessee Titans.

58 Days: Wayne Davis

By Kerry Goode
#58
58 days until kickoff...
In the fall of 1983, Christopher Wayne Davis, "Joe Pound" the all-time tackles leader at the University of Alabama who went on to play for the Arizona Cardinals, was a heavily-recruited standout linebacker at Gordo High School.
The offers he received and the phone calls he treasures to this day from then-Crimson Tide head coach Paul W. “Bear” Bryant.
Davis still stands tall in the Alabama record book. His 327 career tackles from 1983-86 still ranks No. 1 among all Crimson Tide players. He also ranks third on the single-season tackle chart with 125 stops as a junior.
Three decades later, he watches in awe as his oldest son, Ben Davis is now a linebacker with the Tide.
Wayne had the great fortune to coach Ben at Gordo High school where he coaches football and basketball. Wayne is also a Minister. He serves as pastor of New Home Missionary Baptist Church, Gordo, Alabama and Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Cuba.
“I see that all-time tackle record still standing over at Bama,” he said.
Let's so if Ben can break it.

57 Days: Dwight Stephenson

By Kerry Goode
The 1977 Alabama team seemed poised for national-championship acclaim after it creamed Ohio State 35-6 to cap the season in the Sugar Bowl while the two teams ranked ahead of it in the polls lost in their bowl outings.
The center for Alabama's 1977 team, Dwight Stephenson, said he and his teammates thought they had earned the trophies when they won in the first matchup between coaching legends Bear Bryant and Woody Hayes. Instead, Notre Dame, the fifth-ranked team entering th...e bowl season, finished in the No. 1 spot.
"We certainly thought we were in a good position to be national champions," Stephenson said. "I probably didn't understand how that was decided at the time as well as I should have, but we thought we had done what we needed to do. But it didn't work out for us that way. The next two years, it did."
Stephenson was the NFL's All-Pro center from 1983 through 1987, was the NFL's Man of the Year in 1985 and joined the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
Stephenson’s efforts earned him a spot on the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team.
"My goal when I first got down to Miami was to be able to block Bob Baumhower."
A knee injury in 1987 cut short Stephenson's NFL career. He suffered the injury during a fumble return when he was blocked by his immediate predecessor as NFL Man of the Year and former Alabama teammate Marty Lyons, who was a defensive tackle for the New York Jets.
I must give a special shout out to my partner in crime Randy Rockwell. Not highly recruited out of high school, he willed his way to an All-SEC career and the cocaptainship of the 1987 Alabama team. Yours truly being the other captain. Two guys not highly recruited being captains at the University of Alabama. Dreams do come true...

56 Days: Greg Gilbert

By Kerry Goode

#56
Today we celebrate my homeboy who is now the enemy ....Greg Gilbert the current Senior Director of Development of USC Trojans. Greg's wife Caryl Smith Gilbert is the Director of Track & Field for the Trojans.
Gilbert grew up in Decatur Al. before he signed a football scholarship with the Tide and was a member of Austin High's greatest football team — the 1983 squad that went 13-1 and finished runner-up in the Class 4A state playoffs.
He still considers the 1983 season at Austin as one of his highlights. Even when he went to Alabama, he often was reminded of that team, usually by his Crimson Tide teammates who played for Murphy, which beat the Black Bears 7-0 in the championship game. Bill Condon, Norbert Dean, Paul Davenport, Butch Lewis and Keith McCants played on that Murphy squad before moving on to Alabama.

Selected by the Chicago Bears in the 5th round (136th overall) of the 1988 Draft. Gyb also spent time the Los Angeles Raiders and in the World league with the San Antonio Riders and Barcelona Dragons. Greg will lead a group of former USC Trojans playing in the Cowboy Kickoff Golf Classic labor day weekend, when Alabama takes on the Trojans in Dallas at Jerry's World. If you're interested in playing, go to GoodeFoundation.org

When I first saw bama hoho's post of Greg Gilbert he reminded me of Derrick Oden. I was fortunate enough to play against Derrick when I was in high school. He was a pretty good player to say the least.

I thought he, Antonio London, Lemanski Hall, and Derrick Rogers were under appreciated a bit on that 92 defense, compared to the DL because of Eric Curry and John Copeland, and even the secondary with George Teague and Antonio Langham.

55 Days: Derrick Thomas

By Kerry Goode

#55
Derrick Vincent Thomas (January 1, 1967 – February 8, 2000), nicknamed D.T., He played his entire 11-year career for the Chiefs after being drafted fourth overall in the 1989 NFL Draft. Thomas, a member of the class of 2009 Pro Football Hall of Fame, was a premier football player throughout the 1990s and is considered one of the best pass rushers of all time. In 1990 against the Seattle Seahawks, he set an NFL record with seven sacks in a single game.
Finding stories abo...ut Thomas's heroics on the football field is not difficult, whether you're talking about his time at South Miami Senior High School in Miami, with the Crimson Tide, or during a NFL Hall of Fame career with the Kansas City Chiefs. His production at Alabama is mind boggling. He had a NCAA-record 27 sacks in 1988, his final college football season, and finished his career with 52 sacks. Thomas joined a line of successful defensive end/outside linebackers for the Crimson Tide, following such Alabama legends as E.J. Junior and Cornelius Bennett, but he may have simply been the best pass rusher from that position in college football history.
