70 Days: Ryan Kelly

By Kerry Goode

70. Seven Zero
Guys that lead the way....Joe Beazley, Gary Otten,Terrill "Big Chat" Chatman, Jason McDonald, Wesley Britt and Cecil Dowdy.
I must give honor to Cecil Dowdy...a man with the looks of a Hollywood movie star. He played offensive tackle for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide from 1964 through 1966. He was a member of both the 1964 and 1965 national championship teams. Dowdy was also a unanimous College Football All-American. Drafted by the Cleveland Browns and also played for the Los Angeles Rams.
But today we salute Ryan Kelly... For his excellence, Ryan Kelly was deservedly named First-Team All-SEC, First-Team All-American, an Outland Trophy semifinalist, and won the position's highest honor -- the Rimington Trophy given to the best center in the game.
Ryan was drafted in the first round of this years draft. The Indianapolis Colts picked Kelly with the 18th overall pick in the draft. He became the 18th Alabama player drafted in the first round since 2008, the most of any school in that stretch. It also marked the eighth straight year an Alabama player was taken in the first round, the longest current streak in the nation.
Kelly need not rely on the NFL, though. He is a semifinalist for the Campbell Award, which recognizes outstanding athleticism, community service and academic accomplishments. He was also named the 2015 SEC Football Scholar-Athlete of the year. And, this past December, Ryan Kelly picked up his Masters from the University of Alabama. Roll Tide

69 Days: Kurt Schmissrauter

By Kerry Goode

69
Highway 69 runs through Tuscaloosa carrying Student and fans to the Capstone.
One such student like Kurt Schmissrauter.
Kurt was recruited by Coach Bear Bryant. “I grew up a Vols fan. I loved Tennessee but they had struggled a little bit and Alabama was back to back national champions and I thought that was cool," says Kurt. "Choosing Alabama just evolved for me, I fell in love with the whole idea.”
Kurt basically threw a clock radio in a bag and headed to Alabama. “I was probably too young and stupid to really understand the significance of playing for Bear Bryant. I showed up for college to get my physical and all of us had to stand in line buck naked. It was the most intimidating thing you’ve ever seen. The first thing I found out was ‘we weren’t all created equal’,” he chuckles.
Like most college-bound kids, Kurt wanted to have a good time. With his wit and prankster attitude, Kurt had to watch out as pranks made their way back to him. “I am pretty much a sarcastic guy …a real smart-alec. I had smarted off to Willie Meadows, the equipment manager. He was always grumpy and I said something sarcastic to him. He had a jersey in his hand ready to throw to me, but then he went in the back to get another one instead and threw me number 69,” Kurt laughs.
Willie had served in WWII under General Patton as a tank commander and because of Kurt’s German heritage, he would always call him “Kraut”. The two made good friends regardless of their pranks.
“He seemed like such a bitter person, but he really wasn’t – he was just your basic locker-room guy. He put socks and jocks in my basket all the time that didn’t fit me. My calves were so thin, I had to have good fitting socks and he would get me socks that would just fall to the floor.
After injuring his knee, Kurt was a back-up most of the time but did get to start some. “I was very fortunate to get to play and I made a lot of friends. I found that having a sense of humor down there was best case scenario for me,” he says.
“I was always playing pranks and I was really good at imitating people …just having some fun when they were having a bad day - I could have gotten killed on several occasions!” Kurt says.
“We were having a bowl practice one time and the whole team had to go all the way across the field. So I got a hold of Coach Bryant’s mega phone and I did my whistle,” Kurt says as he demonstrates a pursed-lip whistle that mimicked the whistle that hung around the Coaches’ neck.
“I started impersonating Coach Bryant yelling for everyone to get out on the field,” Kurt says. “Everyone did a sprint to get out there and, when they found out it was me – they all started chasing me,” he laughs.
“One of the biggest honors was being chosen with another friend to escort Mrs. Bryant at his funeral and spend time with her; she was always a really sweet lady. She once told me something very important that I kept with me all my life. ‘Don’t let Julie feed you hamburger helper’,” Kurt chuckles. “She said, ‘You will be as big as a cow if you eat all the stuff your kids eat,’ and she was right. I got up to about 300 pounds,” Kurt attests.
Born in Chattanooga, Kurt Schmissrauter’s roots run deep. Kurt returned home to run the family owned business TPC (Textile Printing Company) was founded by his grandfather Joe Sr. in 1924.

68 Days: Jeff Bentley
By Kerry Goode

68 days away from kickoff
These guys worn the number 68-Gary Bramblett, Jeff Bentley, George Wilson, Will Friend, Taylor Pharr to name a few...
Alvin Samples was an All American guard from Tarrant Al.
My friend and teammate Jeff "Chief" Bentley gets the honor today.
Jeff was a two-way starter and led Thompson to the Class 3A state title his senior season. He was a team captain and named to the All-County, All-Midstate, All-State, All-South and All-American teams. He also played basketball and participated in track. Jeff had 3 members of this team to sign with Auburn that season.
Jeff is known for his humor...our first meeting went like this. "Hi I'm Jeff Bentley" and "You are?"
Kerry Goode...I said.
Jeff.."Where are you from?"
I said Town Creek...
Jeff.."Man you're country'er than a row of peas."
From that point on we were friends...because the jokes started to fly.
Jeff was in Coach Bryant's last recruiting class. Coach Perkins first recruiting class and Coach Bill Curry first team as a 5th year senior with yours truly.
Jeff has a couple Nationwide insurance agencies in Alabaster and Hoover.
Jeff's agency has been serving individuals and families in the Alabaster, Pelham, Calera, Montevallo, Helena, Hoover, Birmingham, Northport and Tuscaloosa areas for the last 25 years.
If you need an agent that will do you right. Go see my friend Jeff Bentley... Tell him country KG sent you.

67 Days: Kelvis White and Joe Dismuke
By Kerry Goode

67 days until the fun begins.
Today we celebrate the men that worn #67.
Joe Dismuke, Scott Bolt,James Gregory, Kelvis White, David Sears, J P Adams, Vince Cowell and John Michael Boswell to name a few.
We highlight Kelvis White and Joe Dismuke. A coach and a preacher. Coach Bryant once said,"“Mama wanted me to be a preacher. I told her coachin’ and preachin’ were a lot alike.”
“People who are in it for their own good are individualists. They don’t share the same heartbeat that makes a team so great. A great unit, whether it be football or any organization, shares the same heartbeat.”
Kelvis White is the Head Coach at Jemison high school in Huntsville Al.
Jemison is scheduled to open in August as it replaces J.O. Johnson, which closes at the end of the school year. Jemison will retain the Jaguars nickname and Johnson's blue and yellow colors.
Jemison's season opener is Aug. 26 against Tanner High School. Tanner is coached by his brother, Laron White also a former Tide Players.
White played Al. at Courtland High School while his father, Hall of Fame Coach Louis White, was coaching. He played at the University of Alabama as a defensive lineman under Coach Gene Stallings and Mike Dubose. He also helped more than 70 of his students sign college scholarships.
Joe Dismuke graduated from Southside High School in Gadsden, Etowah County.
Joe was a letterman and part of an SEC Championship and 3 Bowl games while playing all five positions on the offensive line. By luck or by favor, Joe was on the field and played the last play that Coach Bryant ever coached in the 1982 Liberty Bowl game in Memphis. A great honor and distinction was bestowed upon Joe when he was asked to be one of four escorts for Mary Harmon Bryant, Coach Bryant’s widow, at his funeral.
Joe's currently a Financial Services Representative at Principal Financial Group and Joe answered the call into the ministry. He currently serves as Pastor of Whorton Bend United Methodist Church in Etowah County.

66 Days: Roger Shultz and Kevin Welniak

By Kerry Goode

66....Get your kicks on Route 66
Up comes the guys with the sixes.
Roger Shultz, Kevin Welniak, John Wall, Brenon Meadows, Shaun Williams,Andy Harrison, Brian Motley,
Today's honor goes to Roger Shultz and Kevin Welniak.
Roger Shultz, who would gain national fame later in life on TV's "Biggest Loser," was an Alabama center and largest personality. Roger finished as runner-up and lost 164 pounds in just 5 months.
“At that time I was 380 pounds. After about week two, I would’ve become the buffet."
He opted to try out for "The Apprentice" and had a good showing in the casting process before Donald Trump told him he was, “Too heavy.”
Then, "The Biggest Loser" called back.
“I said, ‘Well, I’m still fat, so let’s go for it,’” Shultz said.
Since it was a couples theme, producers wanted Shultz to be paired with a former teammate. Shultz thought Patterson, his roommate at UA, would make a great fit.
“Trent lives in New York and just had his first baby,” Shultz said. “I guess he thought I was calling to congratulate him. I said, ‘How much do you weigh?’ He said, ‘I’m about 420’ and I said, ‘Great!’”
While Shultz, came up short of winning the grand prize on the hit show, he was able to help the Crimson Tide claim the ultimate prize in 1992 as a graduate assistant.
Kevin Welniak from Ft Walton Beach Fl Choctawhatchee High School. A member of Coach Bryant's last signing class.
Kevin is the owner/CEO of a privately held company AttenuTech and Davis Lead Aprons are innovative, responsive and rapidly growing sister companies that provide necessary Essentials for Safe Imaging and protection from dangerous and harmful radiation. Their family of personal protection products specifically serve physicians, nurse, techs and patients in hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers and imaging centers where Fluoroscopy (radiation) is used to perform interventional imaging procedures.

65 Days: Chance Warmack

By Kerry Goode
#65
Here are a few guys to wear the Crimson 65 jersey, Danny Holcombe, Derrick Slaughter,Trent Patterson,Napoleon Folks, Jackson Cook,Dante Ellington,
Both Buddy Brown and Chance Warmack reached All American status.
#65 Chance Warmack is honored today.
Remember when Chance Warmack's last name became a verb? He'd pull his jersey up to expose his midriff while playing guard for Alabama, showing an ample portion of his 330-pound girth to the world. Warmacking became a hashtag as folks from skinny kids to fat dads took to social media to pull up their shirts and show their bellies.
Of course, Warmacking came to an end for its namesake when the Tennessee Titans selected the Alabama All-American with the 10th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. The NFL doesn't go in for that sort of individualism in its protect-the-shield uniform policy.
Warmack invented his signature style during Alabama's 31-6 victory over Florida on Oct. 2, 2010.
"It was really hot," Warmack told reporters before the 2013 NFL Draft. "That jersey's a little tight, so I had to roll it up. It's just been like that ever since."
While celebrating his final championship with the Tide, Warmack posed for photos with fans, who, of course, were Warmacking.
Chance attended Westlake High School in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was an all-American offensive lineman. You may recognize his quarterback at Westlake. He was teammates with quarterback Cam Newton. During his senior year, Warmack was credited with an average of seven pancake blocks per game.
Drafted in 2013 / Round: 1 / Pick: 10 to the Tennessee Titans.
Career highlights and awards
2× SEC Champion (2009, 2012)
3× BCS National Champion (2010, 2012, 2013)
Unanimous All-American (2012)
First-team All-SEC (2012)
Second-team All-SEC (2011)

I honor my teammate Mike Mike Burkett everyone knows him as "Bucket" from Gardendale Al. Every team should have a guy like Mike. Mike kept us informed on the things happening outside of the world of football. Today Mike is still our go to guy. If you're ever in Gardendale and need help, ask anyone for Mike. He recently ran for public office.

63 Days: Jim Bunch

Bunch entered the Alabama starting lineup in the third game of the 1976 season against Vanderbilt.[SUP][3][/SUP] He was the only freshman to start during the season and was recognized as First Team Freshman All-SEC for his efforts.[SUP][2][/SUP] Bunch remained as a fixture in the Crimson Tide offensive line over the next three seasons alongside Buddy Aydelette, Vince Boothe, Mike Brock and Dwight Stephenson and helped lead Alabama to an overall record of 43 wins and 5 losses (43–5) during his career at the Capstone.[SUP][2][/SUP][SUP][3][/SUP]
In recognition for his play during his sophomore and junior years, Bunch was a First Team All-SEC selection.[SUP][4][/SUP] After his senior year, Bunch was named First Team All-SEC and as a consensus selection to the 1979 College Football All-America Team and was awarded the Douglas McArthur Trophy in early 1980 in recognition for his achievements as a Virginia athlete outside the commonwealth.[SUP][3][/SUP][SUP][4][/SUP][SUP][5][/SUP] In recognition of his accomplishments as a student athlete, the Virginia state legislature passed a resolution that declared February 2, 1980, as "Jim Bunch Day."[SUP][3][/SUP]
Although he was a consensus selection to the All-America Team, Bunch went undrafted and was not signed as an undrafted free agent after the 1980 NFL Draft.[SUP][6][/SUP] He was left unsigned due to NFL teams believing he was too short to be competitive as an offensive lineman as a professional.[SUP][6][/SUP] As such, Bunch then played a single season as a semi-professional with the West Virginia Rockets.
