Georgia dismissed freshman defensive back Chad Clay on Wednesday on the same day he was arrested for the second time in a little more than 10 weeks.
Clay was booked into the Clarke County Jail at 6:04 p.m. on misdemeanor theft by taking and was released on a $1,500 bond at 7:17 p.m. He was previously arrested with teammate Julian Rochester on April 11 on two felony charges-- having a weapon in a school safety zone and criminal damage to property of the second degree--for shooting up a dorm room with a BB gun.
“Unfortunately, Chad will no longer be a part of our football program,” coach Kirby Smart said in a statement. “It is very disappointing, and we wish him the best in his efforts to continue his education.
The case number to Clay's arrest is referenced on the University of Georgia police log from an incident Monday at the Ramsey Center. A male student reported between 4:10 and 5:50 p.m. that his Apple headphones, valued at $30, were stolen while left unattended in the building. Police were notified shortly thereafter.
Clay, an early enrollee from Peachtree Ridge and a three-star recruit, is the second Georgia player dismissed since the end of spring practice. Sophomore defensive lineman Chauncey Rivers was arrested a third time on drug-related charges on May 11 in Doraville. He faces four charges including a felony violation of Georgia’s controlled substance act.
Rochester, a freshman defensive lineman, remains on the team and his case has not been resolved. Smart has not announced if he will face a game suspension.
Defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter had charges dropped for underage possession of alcohol and using a fake ID. Smart has also not said if the sophomore still will be suspended a game as was previously announced. Smart said cornerback sophomore Juwuan Briscoe has been disciplined internally for an April arrest for driving without a valid license and not wearing a seat belt.
