Safety J.R. Reed, who left Tulsa’s football team after the spring semester, filed paperwork last week with Georgia to be able to transfer into the program on scholarship.
The financial aid agreements Reed signed with Georgia and the SEC on June 22, obtained by Onlineathens.com through an open records request, cover the next three academic years and states he must report for enrollment before the fall 2016 semester. The full grant-in-aid includes tuition, fees, room, board, books and cost of attendance.
Georgia also received permission on June 16 from Alabama to speak with Maurice Smith, a graduate transfer cornerback. Compliance coordinator Riley Edwards’s letter said Alabama grants permission “to any institution “ to speak with Smith regarding his interest in possibly transferring to that school.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Reed had five tackles and a quarterback hurry last season as a freshman while appearing in all 13 games but may have started at free safety this year for Tulsa, according to the Tulsa World.
Reed is the son of former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jake Reed and the cousin of four-star Grayson cornerback Deangelo Gibbs who Georgia is pursuing.
J.R. Reed made plans in 2014 to grayshirt out of Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, Texas but ended up enrolling at Tulsa in January 2015.
Reed is expected to have to sit out this season, according to Dawgs247, which first reported Reed’s plans to transfer to Georgia.
Smith was the favorite to win Alabama’s starting nickel back spot entering fall camp, according to AL.com which said Miami, Georgia, Maryland and Southern Cal were the early favorites to land him. He would be eligible to play immediately.
Smith, from Sugar Land, Texas, had 15 tackles last season playing for current Georgia defensive coordinator and secondary coach Mel Tucker on a defense coordinated by Kirby Smart, now Georgia’s head coach.
