HOOVER, Ala. -- Bill Hancock said the College Football Playoff is considering moving the playoff semifinals from New Year's Eve.

Hancock, the CFP's executive director, said the move could happen no sooner than after the 2018 regular season.

"We're exploring if there's a better [date] for the semifinals," Hancock said. "We're thinking about if New Year's Eve is the way to go."

The fact that Hancock publicly addressed the possibility of moving the games off New Year's Eve indicates it is "likely to happen," a source said.

They also said the earliest they could change it would be for the 2018 season, so at least two more years of this.

Play them on the last Saturday of the year. At 1ET and 4ET if it's NYE. Rose and Sugar Bowls if it's NYD. So what if the rotation is changed? It can be evened out.

Or just take the Rose and Sugar Bowls out of the rotation. Give them the games just when it's on NYD. I suspect that would get their attention and change their attitude.

It will not a big issue for this season or next because this season's 2016 semifinals at the Peach and Fiesta bowls will be on New Year's Eve (Saturday). Saturdays are meant for college football. The problem with last season was it was Thursday New Year's Eve games and alot of people had to work.

The 2017 season semifinals at the Rose and Sugar bowls will be on Monday Jan. 1.
