Georgia will hold two scrimmages this preseason and Kirby Smart would like to narrow down the quarterback race after the second to name his No. 1 guy.
“Obviously, that’s guessing right now,” Smart said about the timetable Monday on ESPN’s "First Take."
The first-year Bulldogs head coach made his comments as he went through the network’s “Car Wash,” making appearances on several of the network’s platforms.
He said coaches want all three quarterbacks competing for the job to get a chance to lead the team during fall camp.
On the “Mike & Mike Show,” Smart responded to former LSU defensive tackle Anthony “Booger” McFarland who said five-star freshman Jacob Eason was the most talented of the quarterbacks by saying that Georgia won 10 games with Greyson Lambert as starter last year.
Lambert, Smart said, “did a great job of managing that offense and he’s done a good job of doing that leading that to now. He’s been in a similar offense to the offense we’re running now.”
He said that Eason “has to earn the trust” of the team like Lambert and redshirt junior Brice Ramsey.
“The other guys on the team are going to matter, too,” Smart said of the rest of the players. “They come in and they give some input on which guy is the best leader, which guy throws it the best. That’s going to help us make that decision.”
On "Russillo & Kanell," Smart was asked by former Florida State quarterback Danny Kanell how special Eason has to be to start week one against North Carolina.
“Well, he’s got to give us the best opportunity to win the game,” Smart said. “I just know he’s got a talented arm and he’s got to be smart enough and be a good decision-maker to play within the system and not think that it’s all on him in order to be that guy. Greyson has proven that he can play within the system and be disciplined, the system that he was in. Brice has got to prove that as well. All three will get that opportunity in fall camp. Jacob does a special arm talent, but Jacob has not been anointed or appointed that job.”
