For a good watch with good information Google Last Week Tonight Lottery and watch it. Can't post directly because of language.

Bentley is looking for any means to distract from his personal problems.
If legalizing weed and prostitution would make people forget "I sure do like that", he'd go full libertarian on us in a heartbeat.

Seems like that happens in most every state where the lottery is 'earmarked for education'. SMH
I do not have a problem with a lottery per se.
At its core, a lottery takes money from a lot of people (disproportionately poor people), and give half that money to a very, very rich person (the lottery winner is, by definition, very, very rich).
The saving grace is that it does not take that money by force. It is voluntarily given, and the state gets a cut, which makes it less likely to come after me with a tax increase.
It is still a dumb idea, from the perspective of the lottery ticket purchaser's perspective, but whatever...

Only six states don't have a lottery. Folks are spending that money so we might as well keep some of it in-state.

IMO a lottery won't pass unless the proceeds go toward education. Helping the kids always tugs at the heart strings.

Didn't the last lottery bill also give three sites/people a monopoly on casino gambling?
Did your parents ever ask what you would do if all your friends were jumping off a cliff? LOL

A lottery is simply a tax.

It is voluntary.
It is paid disproportionately by the poor.
It is generally successful in raising significant revenue.
It is problematic for those with gambling addictions.

I would personally prefer some combination of sales and property taxes for revenue, combined with good discipline over spending. It is what is is, however. At least I won't pay it.

we will occasionally clean the change out the car console and buy a power-ball ticket. this usually only happens when the jackpot is very high, which decreases our chances even more.

More to the point, Bentley and most of the legislators don't care that it won't. This allows them to say that they're doing something without having to take more prudent (albeit more politically difficult) actions, such as reforming the state tax code.
For sure, the few should pay more so they can receive less.

Your odds of winning are the same no matter what the jackpot is.

yep, i got distracted thinking about more people playing it when the jackpot is high.

when it comes down to it, i'm willing to pay $2 for a very remote chance of winning the take-home part of a $300 mil jackpot.

That attitude is why Montgomery is a cesspool. Stop voting for guys because he throws a rifle over his shoulder and talks about being a Christian in their commercials. Start voting in people who are actually activist with a platform. We need to stop resigning ourselves to the same old platitudes that always turn out phony and vote Montgomery into being the capital this state deserves.

Why not? We do it for those at the federal level!

Is it OK if I still vote for Luther Strange just because he's very tall?
