I know he left in an unpleasant manner, but I would not wish this on anyone. He has just had a kidney removed due to cancer.

Sounds like he was staged at T1a or T1b. Five year survival rate for renal cell carcinoma at this stage is 81%. And because most people with renal cell carcinoma are older, actual cancer survival rates are probably higher that this (i.e. past 60 you have a pretty good chance of dying from a heart attack in 5 years even without cancer). So his odds are pretty good. But cancer still sucks.
