Kenneth Towns chose to come back for another Georgia season after it was initially thought a broken bone in his foot that knocked him out of the bowl game meant the end of his college career.
The senior wide receiver’s reward is that he is one of three walk-ons that have been awarded scholarships, coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday. Towns has 11 catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns in 31 games as a Bulldogs
Word about senior outside linebacker Tommy Long being one those came last week when the principal of his high school, Wheeler, shared the good news on Twitter. Long, who played in one game last season, was named outstanding defensvie walk-on this spring.
The other walk-on going on scholarship is redshirt junior snapper Trent Frix, who played in 10 games last season and six in 2013. His brother, Ty, was a walk-on snapper from 2009-12 who also was awarded by then coach Mark Richt.
“Those guys have done a tremendous job for our program," Smart said. “I do want to say this: There are a lot of deserving walk-ons out there so I’m always hesitant (to announce). It’s a hard decision on who you give those scholarships to. There are a lot of deserving guys out there that are really giving great effort and playing with toughness and doing the things we ask them to do. So it’s hard to just single out just three guys because there’s certainly others that are helping us out.”
A team spokesman said that cornerback Aaron Davis, who came to Georgia as a walk-on, remains on scholarship after being awarded last year.
