According to coach Kirby Smart, Georgia entered this week having dealt with weather (rain or lightning) for 16 of the first 19 practices of camp.
Clouds forming in the sky is irritating to Smart while Georgia's indoor practice facility is being constructed.
“If you want to know my frustration level, it’s out of this roof for dealing with it because it’s out of my control,” Smart said Monday to the Touchdown Club of Athens.
Guess what? It rained in Athens most of Wednesday afternoon (stay tuned for if Georgia managed to practice as scheduled).
Without the ability to work indoors, Smart doesn't have many options. Due to classes and academic meetings, the best bet to beat the weather is early morning practices.
That's not going to happen.
“You get less of a practice out of it," Smart said. "Kids don’t practice as good at 6 a.m. as they do at 3 (p.m.). That’s a fact. Something's got to give.”
The indoor facility is three decades in the making. Former football coach and athletic director Vince Dooley first explored the idea of building one in 1985. Then again in 1998. An indoor space was built for Mark Richt in 2010, but there wasn't enough room for 11 on 11 or kicking and punting.
Richt was forced to move practices threatened by weather to Atlanta Falcons facilities in Flowery Branch. That meant players and coaches had to bus an hour away.
When it doesn't rain, Smart says an indoor facility is needed when his players go through multiple practices in a row with temperatures hotter than 100 degrees.
For now though, Smart has no options. And given his analogy for how he wants his players to practice and perform in games, he’ll remain frustrated until the facility is completed (possibly as early as December).
"There's two kind of people in the world," he said. "There's the thermostats and there's thermometers. The thermometer reports what it is. ... It sets the temperatures and everybody reacts to it, whether you have a good or bad practice. But the thermostat, which is what we want to be, sets the temperature. You put it on what you want, it sets the temperature and it controls it. We repeatedly tell our guys, we're going to be the thermostat.”
