Georgia appears to have narrowed its quarterback race down to two.
Freshman Jacob Eason continues to work as the No. 1 quarterback. During the media viewing period at Friday’s practice, Eason was followed by fifth-year senior Greyson Lambert.
Junior Brice Ramsey was on the side and did not get work as the other two quarterbacks went in 7-on-7 against a scout team defense. The Bulldogs dove into preparation Friday for the Sept. 3 opener against North Carolina with the team starting on-the-practice-field work for the game in earnest.
After practice was closed to the media, Eason went with the No. 1 offense the entire practice, according to a report Friday night from DawgPost, citing sources. The quarterbacks met individually with coach Kirby Smart abut the game-week practice rotation. Eason is expected to start unless something goes wrong in the next week, DawgPost reported.
In an interview taped earlier in the day that aired on the Paul Finebaum Show on the SEC Network, Smart said "we're still working through some things. ...We're trying to figure out which guy is going to give us the best opportunity to win this game. Each guy is working really hard and we're continuing to get those guys reps. We're trying to make a decision as soon as we possibly can but we're not ready to make that call yet."
Lambert started all but one game last season.
"I think experience has value," Lambert said. "So when you've got guys coming back, most of the time you've got a declared starter, you never have that issue. When you don't and there's a battle, it's usually really so close and it's not a clear-cut deal that this is what happens. You wait to make the best decision and sometimes the decision you make is not final."
During the media viewing in one period, Eason took five reps, completing all five passes to running backs Nick Chubb and Elijah Holyfield, wide receiver Michael Chigbu, a deep ball to wide receiver Jayson Stanley (on a ball that hung up but Stanley still managed to snag) and to tight end Isaac Nauta.
Lambert then came in for four plays, completing three of the balls with one pass short to tight end Jeb Blazevich.
Then Eason returned.
At this point the media was asked to leave.
Reporters were only supposed to get one period of viewing--less than usual--but the extra period was added after the bus transporting media from the Butts-Mehre building to the UGA Club Sports complex arrived with just over four minutes left on the clock. Media were asked not to photograph or video that extra time.
Smart told Finebaum that running back Sony Michel, who continues to practice in a non-contact jersey while recovering from a broken forearm, "looks great," Smart said. "He's running, he's in 7-on-7, he's in a black jersey, he was returning kicks yesterday. He's doing a lot of positive things, it's just that he hasn't been cleared yet. We won't know that. It may even be a gametime decision."
Other items from practice
--Holyfield, the freshman running back, practiced without limitations after being out of practice since last Saturday’s scrimmage with a sprained ankle.
--The top defensive linemen in one drill: Trent Thompson, Jonathan Ledbetter, Justin Young and Julian Rochester.
