One of Georgia football’s student assistants may be able to teach a thing or two to about the kicking game.
Former Bulldog kicker Kevin Buter, a College Football Hall of Fame member who won a Super Bowl on the 1985 Chicago Bears, is helping out the program where he was a two-time All-American.
The 54-year old Butler is back at Georgia as an undergraduate student and is able to go on the field at practice.
"He's finishing up his degree, which allows him to help us," coach Kirby Smart said. "I think it's the greatest asset that a first-year coach could have, especially for somebody who really has not dealt on the psychological level with kickers. Who better to have than one of the greatest who ever kicked in the game?"
Butler will be at practices "a couple of days a week" only due to other obligations and classes, Smart said. He indicated it is not a paid position.
"I'm very grateful that he's willing to do it and he's been a great asset for those guys, kind of a sounding board," Smart said. "A lot of places don't have guys who they can even talk to."
He is listed by Georgia as still serving on the pregame radio show for the Bulldogs and a Sunday morning Bulldogs call-in show.
Georgia already has a special teams coach, Shane Beamer, among its nine full-time assistant coaches. He also coaches the tight ends. James Vollono serves as a special teams analyst.
Georgia will have a walk-on kicker replacing Marshall Morgan--either Rodrgio Blankenship or William Ham. Kevin’s son, Drew, won the Ray Guy Award winner in 2009 and now punts for the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL.
Kevin Butler’s 11 field goals of 50 or more yards in his college career is a school record and he has the two longest field goals by a Bulldog of 60 and 59.
His 77 field goals made from 1981-84 are second most in program history and he is fourth on the career points list with 353. He played in the NFL from 1985-97 and ended his pro career with 1,208 points, sixth most at the time among kickers.
